Publisher's Summary

This is the true story of how one moment in time, by the thinnest thread of a chance, changed the course of a small boy's life in ways that are beyond description. One day he would dance with some of the greatest ballet companies of the world. One day he would be a friend to a president and first lady, movie stars, and the most influential people in America. One day he would become a star: Mao's last dancer, and the darling of the West. Here is Li Cunxin's own story, a beautiful, rich account of an inspirational life, told with honesty, dignity, and pride.

What the critics say

"[A] heartening rags-to-riches story." (Publishers Weekly)

"[Paul English] exercises such an intense and masterful concentration on the text that the listener's interest never flags.... He imbues the narrative with ingenuousness and enthusiasm, which endearingly befit the image Li is attempting to present of himself. The result is an audiobook that is superior to its source." Touching true story about never giving up

There was a paragraph taken from a true story in our grade 11 english book about a poor boy standing in line to get a small piece of thrown away fatty pork for a coin so he could eat the fried pork cracklings. It touched my heart to read about the hardships of some people endure in their everyday life within that small paragraph. So years and years after graduating from school and collage, the paragraph about pork cracklings came into my mind. After doing some research online, I found the original source where the paragraph come from and it was “Mao’s last Dancer”. I immediately bought the book from Amazon and I was hooked. The story is about hardships, determination, perseverance and over coming obstacles of a young boy named Cunxin Li. I am so glad I bought the book and the audio book because it was one of the best memoirs I have ever read in my life. I hope I could meet Mr. Li one day. I Highly recommend this book.
