À propos de cet audio
You’ve heard the story before: an orphaned boy, raised by a wise old man, comes to a fuller knowledge of his magic and uses it to fight the great evil threatening his world.
But what if that hero were destined to become the new dark lord?
The Academy of Chaenbalu has stood against magic for centuries. Hidden from the world, acting from the shadows, it trains its students to detect and retrieve magic artifacts, which it jealously guards from the misuse of others. Because magic is dangerous: Something that heals can also harm, and a power that aids one person may destroy another.
Of the academy’s many students, only the most skilled can become Avatars - warrior thieves, capable of infiltrating the most heavily guarded vaults - and only the most determined can be trusted to resist the lure of magic. More than anything, Annev de Breth wants to become one of them.
But Annev carries a secret. Unlike his classmates who were stolen as infants from the capital city, Annev was born in the village of Chaenbalu, was believed to be executed, and then unknowingly raised by his parents’ killers. Seventeen years later, he struggles with the burdens of a forbidden magic, a forgotten heritage, and a secret deformity. When Annev is subsequently caught between the warring ideologies of his priestly mentor and the Academy’s masters, he must finally decide whether to accept the truth of who he really is…or embrace the darker truth of what he may one day become.

Great story with amazing narration

Fortunately, Call appears to listen - eventually embarking on a creditable - if largely unoriginal - story about a teenaged boy with magical potential, a mysterious past, and a prophesied dark future venturing into the world to uncover the true state of Magic (not what he's been taught). The characters are interesting, the description is vivid, the fantasy world (albeit insufficiently developed) is intriguing, and the action scenes are reasonably well-choreographed.
On the other hand, the pacing is so execrable that it's hard to approve of the book. The protagonist's remarkably "ho-hum" struggles with bullies, mean headmasters, girls, and contradictory homelife advice dominate fully ⅓ of the book for some reason. When the action DOES start, the fights, killings, betrayals, and discoveries happen without relent.. so rapidly that it's hard to discern what - exactly - is happening with 'Annev'.
Doubtless the "adequate" rating I give the book is partly due to distinctly average narration from Peter Kenny, too. His diction, reading rate, cadence, and tone are professional enough.. but he exhibits occasionally quite weak voice-acting (hard to understand accents) and a natural sibilance that Blackstone Publishing sound engineers struggle to soften.
In toto, this 6.5/10-star offering is worth a download if you're patient with hour after hour of in-class competitions & tests followed by a rushed jumble of violently exposed revelations.. and can get 'Master Of Sorrows' as part of the 'Plus' initiative - but paying a Credit for it would be hard to defend.
Plodding.. then Incomprehensively Breakneck

The narration that Peter gives is expressive and clear however his volume control almost gives a sense of it being told by captain Kirk. he regularly goes from a whisper to a shout in the same sentence, which depending on how and where you are listening can leave you struggling to hear what is being said to discomfort from shouting.
Interesting unique story
