About this listen

We Are Enough: Engaging with the World from a Place of Worthiness

What does it take to be secure in our sense of belonging and self-worth? We may hustle to attain this security through achievements, meeting expectations, or repeating affirmations to ourselves - but Dr. Brené Brown's research has shown there is ultimately one obstacle to our sense of worthiness. “Shame is the barrier,” she teaches, “and building shame resilience is how we overcome it.” With Men, Women, and Worthiness, Dr. Brown draws upon more than 12 years of investigation to reveal how we can disarm the influence of shame to cultivate a life of greater courage, joy, and love. In this rich and heartfelt examination of this pivotal element of happiness, she invites you to explore:

  • The differences and similarities between the experience of shame for men and women.
  • Guilt vs. shame - why one is a useful force for growth, while the other keeps us small.
  • The four elements of shame resilience - identifying our triggers, practicing critical awareness, sharing our story, and speaking honestly about shame.
  • Empathy as the primary antidote to shame.

“Whether you are a man, woman, or child, every one of us has the irreducible need for love and belonging,” Dr. Brown teaches. “A sense of self-worth, unhindered by the inner voices of shame, allows us to meet that need.” With the warmth, candor, and humor that has made her a celebrated speaker, Brené Brown offers a road map for navigating the emotions that hold us back-so we can cultivate a life of authenticity and connection.

I discovered Brené on tv the other night while randomly landing in an Oprah Winfrey interview. I immediately bought this book and it exceeded every expectation. Can’t wait to read more of her books but I have a feeling this audiobook very concisely sums up a lot of her work!! I want to buy a paper version and my mission today is to find out if there actually is one.

I listened to this book twice. The second time I took notes. I liked the Author’s Authenticity Mantra. I highly recommend this book for everyone. This book is encouraging, helpful, and teaches us that we are all worthy of love and belonging. It explains why we may feel unworthy; talks about shame; empathy and compassion, shame resilience, strategies of disconnection, and how to work through the journey of shame. What was most helpful to me is learning that shame hijacks the limbic system just like trauma symptoms/reactions. I’ve been doing work(self-help) for multiple years now - learning about trauma and grief, and this was the first time I have heard a connection between the limbic system and shame. Which completely makes sense. I have fallen into all 3 strategies you speak about that people use to deal with shame. Learning what you have shared will be beneficial to my healing and growth journey. Thank you to the Author Brene Brown for sharing her insights, knowledge, wisdom and personal experiences. You, and the work you do are appreciated.

"The less we talk about our shame, the more we have it. The more we talk about our shame, the less we have it" - Brene Brown.

At a loss off words for how clearly and illuminating Brene Brown captures the essence of who we are as people, the difference between shame and guilt and that we, as we are, with all our flaws and imperfections, are enough.
BE WHO YOU ARE

We ARE enough. Period.

In this age where shame is running rampant and weaponized by many people in authority - teachers, politicians, religious leaders, employers parents,et al, Brene’s message breathes life and wholeness into those who desperately need to hear “you are worthy...you matter...you are enough.”
Brené is a masterful narrator and storyteller. You will not be disappointed in her message!
