Publisher's Summary

Ever since his astonishing victory in the 1991 PGA Championship, John Daly has enthralled fans with his big drives, bigger personality, and "Grip It and Rip It" approach to golf - and to life. Usually seen with a Marlboro Light dangling from his lip, John is the unchained, unpredictable, unapologetic bad boy of professional golf. "The only rules I follow", JD likes to say, "are the Rules of Golf."

My Life in and out of the Rough is a thrillingly - and sometimes shockingly - candid memoir of a larger-than-life athlete battling assorted addictions (alcohol, gambling, chocolate, sex), his weight, and, perhaps worst of all, divorce lawyers. (He's been married four times.)

A two-time major winner before he turned 30, John Daly is one of the most popular athletes in the world. Taking listeners with him off the fairway and into his $1.5-million motor home for a rollicking ride through his life - an ever-churning world of booze, burgers, casinos, country music, and breathtaking moonshots - Daly reveals how a down-home Everyman from Arkansas managed to rise to the peak of the golf world, escape from the depths of abject depression, and, finally, take control of his life.

Well, sort of.

Good short listen, bad choice for narrator

Always entertaining to read about John Daly, but they couldn't have picked a worse narrator for the book. It's not that the narrator was bad, it was just a terrible fit for what's supposed to be John's voice. The book's subject matter takes place when he was in his 20's and 30's mostly and published when he was around 39-40, but the narrator's voice sounds like someone in their 60's. If you've ever heard John speak in real life you'll likely be thrown off by the narration as I was.

Also be aware this book was originally published in 2007 and that's where the story ends.

Great story, just wish there was more.

Would have loved to have had John Daly narrate himself to get the storyteller feel but regardless would listen to again.

Grip it and rip it!

John Daly has overcome so much and has blessed so many people with his golf game a big heart. Great story and the only thing that could have made this better was John Daly narrating.

Clarified many rumors

I enjoyed the story, and it cleared up some of the rumors he endured during his rough stretches.

Great story but the worst choice of narrators

This is a great story of Johns life but unfortunately the narration was a distraction. John is from Arkansas, the narrator sounds 80 years old and sometimes frail as well as a f he’s from maybe the North East. It just didn’t fit.
I would have preferred to read this one rather than listen.

Something missing

While the look into JD’s life provided amazing insight into an awesome and interesting character, it felt like a lot was left unsaid. Is the book worth a listen, YES! Could it have been better, YES! Would I read the next one, HELL YES! But JD could have said more, admitted more and shared more. I hope the back nine comes out soon.
