Publisher's Summary

Discover the heartwarming true story of a life-changing friendship between a man and his rescue cat, Nala, as they adventure together on a bike journey around the world - from the Instagram phenomenon @1bike1world.

When 30-year-old Dean Nicholson set off from Scotland to cycle around the world, his aim was to learn as much as he could about our troubled planet. But he hadn't bargained on the lessons he'd learn from his unlikely companion.

Three months after leaving home, on a remote road in the mountains between Montenegro and Bosnia, he came across an abandoned kitten. Something about the piercing eyes and plaintive meowing of the bedraggled little cat proved irresistible. He couldn't leave her to her fate, so he put her on his bike and then, with the help of local vets, nursed her back to health. Soon on his travels with the cat he named Nala, they forged an unbreakable bond - both curious, independent, resilient and adventurous.

The video of how they met has had 20 million views and their Instagram has grown to almost 750k followers - and still counting! Experiencing the kindness of strangers, visiting refugee camps, rescuing animals through Europe and Asia, Dean and Nala have already learned that the unexpected can be pretty amazing.

Together with Garry Jenkins, writer with James Bowen of the best-selling A Street Cat Named Bob, Dean shares the extraordinary tale of his and Nala's inspiring and heart-warming adventure together.

What the critics say

“There are moments of tension, like when Nala can’t be found for a whole morning, and profundity ... The writing is more like people you just met at a hostel telling you about their travels after a few pints... Nicholson is at his best when he tells the story of a man finding a sense of purpose from an unlikely (and adorable) source...charming.” (New York Times Book Review)

“Charming.” (USA Today)

“A gorgeous book ... complete with photos that will melt your heart.” (The U.S. Sun)

The Story the World Needed!

As a cat lover, I couldn't wait to read the simple story of a man and his cat, and I wasn't disappointed. After the year of Covid, it was so wonderful to read the story of Dean and Nala. I was fascinated following their journey around Europe and the travails of moving between countries. My heart was in my throat as I waited to see if Dean would make it back to Nala before Hungary shut down. The best part is knowing I can continue to follow their journeys on YouTube. Definitely a match made in Heaven.

Heartwarming story and great listen

I have really enjoyed following along on Dean and Nala's story. Like others, wasn't sure how the book would be. I LOVE it. I have been listening to it to and from work and it puts me in such a good mood for the day. Especially right now with how difficult everything is. It brings me hope and gives me joy. And the Scottish gentleman reading it does a wonderful job. Thank you for this little slice of happiness in a time when its so hard to see anything good in the world.

Wonderful

Dean did a great job telling his story with Nala. Sometimes I felt as if I were right there with them. I wonder though, if maybe the story was written too soon seeing as they have much more traveling to do and have not even made it halfway around the world yet. I will definitely be following their travels through social media from now on. I definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for a good nonfiction read.

Cat lover

The story was good but I was annoyed with the performance because there was a similar way of expressing delight all the way through it got very monotonous. Otherwise I like the connection between a human to a cat

My Heart is Full

I can’t say enough how beautiful this story is. I’ve been following Dean and Nala’s adventures for almost two years in Social Media. I thought I understood the story of their adventures through posts. But reading the story fills in the gaps of beautiful, sad, scary and happy moments that aren’t always told through pictures. I am in love with Nala and Dean’s story of searching for purpose and finding it by taking listening to his heart (and persistent meows) is inspiring. A beautiful story.

Wonderful, beautiful story!

Loved it! Bicycling, cat rescue, traveling the world - such a beautiful story. It truly restores one's faith in humanity. As I listened to Dean and Nala's adventure, I found myself smiling and wishing to be as lucky as Nala getting to travel the world. The part about the bear made me laugh out loud. It was so sad to come to the end of the book. I dearly hope there is another book on the way.

Absolutely WONDERFUL book

I highly recommend this book. It found me when I needed it the most. Dean's story is so wonderfully told in the audio book. I love Nala and all of her quirks that stand out amongst a host of powerful experiences. I love this book, highly recommend.
