The Best memoir I have read
Marie Wilson was the only woman and the only settler to serve as a Truth and Reconciliation Commissioner (TRC). She was also the mom of one of my best friends growing up in Yellowknife and a cherished colleague to my mom at CBC North. I have many fond childhood memories of Marie - including ringing in the new millennium at her house in Yellowknife in 2000. ❄️
I found it interesting that she chose the title "North of Nowhere" for her book, a phrase she borrowed from her Mother In Law, an Indigenous elder from the Northwest Territories - northwest of Ottawa, but "north of nowhere" to her, as her family has called the land home for many generations. 🪶
Marie's memoir is authentic and vulnerable. Not only does she speak candidly about her raw and powerful experience interviewing and giving space to residential school survivors across the country, she also weaves in honest and touching moments from her own life- including triumphs, but more importantly struggles- with relationships, career, family, and moments where she felt she failed to rise to the occasion. Her story has helped me to get through some challenging times in my own life. 🧡
Murray Sinclair, former judge and chair of the TRC, has said, "Education got us into this mess, and education will get us out." I think it's important that as Canadians, we make an effort to learn about the dark legacy of residential schools and what we can do to further the spirit of reconciliation. Reading (or listening) to this book is a good place to start. Marie also narrates the audiobook on Audible, and after many years of experience in broadcast journalism, she does a great job! 🕊

Sensitive and historic
A great honour and privilege to have done what she did as commissioner. She’s a wonderful woman and has a great reference in this book for what she went through.
