About this listen
Now a student at Wurthaven, Will is confronted with the truth of the present.
The powerful magic embodied by wizards like his grandfather is but a distant memory. Though the practice of the current day is timid and uninspired, Will needs the knowledge that’s preserved and managed by the college. At every turn he finds that sorcery is supreme, while wizards are trained merely to assist and support those who hold the real power - a power based on an evil so deep that few who are living know the truth of its foundation.
As a student of wizardry, he’s expected to know his place and stay in it, but Will isn’t like the other students. His grandfather’s teaching has made him into something different, something forgotten - something they will learn to fear.
If he can grow into his power, with every choice, every refusal to submit, Will creates more enemies, enemies who aren’t content to let him live in peace. Without friends or support, Will must survive the knives in the dark, for Cerria is no place for those who refuse to follow the rules.

Story
The ancient magic of wizards was anything but dark. It was the enlightenment that lifted humanity from the squalor of superstition, and the worship of fell spirits and capricious gods, but those days are gone. The shining glory of the sorcerers burned away the subtlety of wisdom, replacing it with easy power, held only in the hands of the elite - a new age built upon the elemental supremacy of aristocrats and the ignorance of the masses.

Story
Jin Rou wanted to be a cultivator. A man powerful enough to defy the heavens. A master of martial arts. A lord of spiritual power. Unfortunately for him, he died, and now I’m stuck in his body. Arrogant Masters? Heavenly Tribulations? All that violence and bloodshed? Yeah, no thanks. I’m getting out of here. Farm life sounds pretty great. Tilling a field by hand is fun when you’ve got the strength of ten men—though maybe I shouldn’t have fed those Spirit Herbs to my pet rooster.

loved it with no struggle to finish. the story grips onto you attention like no other. the narrator also delivers the characters quite well. though I do feel bad for his vocals when he voices the GD cat lol not sure if he does so in this book or the one after. but still very well done

Brilliantly written story
I'm loving the story so far! It has a brilliantly written plot, well developed magic system, and, my personal favorite part, the main character's development is front and center with parts of his personality and convictions traceable to events in this or the first book.
I hope it keeps up this quality throughout the series!

I’m loving this series, this is book two
Loving the book so far, 1 had a great deal of detail and lots of plot twists that keep the book interesting, I enjoy the twists and turns that are found in the second book and have already bought the third book, highly recommended for those who love battle magic books

Capable Take On The 'Magical School' Trope
This Michael G. Manning story builds on the development of young wizard 'William Cartwright' - now enrolled in a School of Wizardry at the behest of the dastardly king. His learning - both enhanced & stymied by the spirit of his now-dead Grandfather 'Arragan' (existing in a magic ring) - is a danger-filled genuinely entertaining coming-of-age process (albeit somewhat formulaic) that repeatedly reminded me of Rothfuss's 'Kingkiller' series. The writing is commendable & loaded with Manning's impressive laugh-out-loud humor, the magic system & worldbuilding are outstanding, and the plotting is action-packed & fun.
On the less fortunate side, Manning can be annoyingly crude at times (some of the F-bombs are ill-advised), the romantic elements of the story are disruptive (ie. repeated hookups), and Will is a ridiculously moral-ethical and moderately OP protagonist. Those deficiencies are minor, however.
As to presentation: Tim Gerard Reynolds reads with flair - exhibiting unimpeachable diction, timbre, cadence, and tone.. and remarkable comic timing. I had some issues with particular voice-acting choices (the stereotypical MidWest "American" accent for Arragan can get to be irritating, for example), but the performance is solidly above-average overall.
Altogether, 'Secrets and Spellcraft' is a thoroughly enjoyable continuation of the 'Art of the Adept' series. It merits 9 stars out of 10. Spend the Credit.
