Story
In her lively social history of American women and aging, acclaimed New York Times columnist Gail Collins illustrates the ways in which age is an arbitrary concept that has swung back and forth over the centuries. From Plymouth Rock (when a woman was considered marriageable if "civil and under fifty years of age"), to a few generations later, when they were quietly retired to elderdom once they had passed the optimum age for reproduction, to recent decades, American attitudes towards age have been a moving target.

Power is one of the most misunderstood - and therefore vilified - concepts in our society. Many assume power is predetermined by personality or wealth, or that it’s gained by strong-arming others. You might even write it off as “dirty” and want nothing to do with it. But by staying away from power, you give it up to someone else who may not have your best interest in mind. We must understand and use our power to have impact, and pioneering researchers Julie Battilana and Tiziana Casciaro provide the playbook for doing so in Power, for All.

In our unique genomes, every one of us carries the story of our species - births, deaths, disease, war, famine, migration, and a lot of sex. But those stories have always been locked away - until now. Who are our ancestors? Where did they come from? Geneticists have suddenly become historians, and the hard evidence in our DNA has completely upended what we thought we knew about ourselves. Acclaimed science writer Adam Rutherford explains exactly how genomics is completely rewriting the human story - from 100,000 years ago to the present.

Publisher's Summary
This mindset and these exercises will help you build everlasting self-discipline and unbeatable willpower.
Imagine that you have this rare kind of power that enables you to maintain iron resolve, crystal clarity, and everyday focus to gradually realize all of your dreams by consistently ticking one goal after another off your to-do list. Way too often, people and their minds don't really play in one team.
Wouldn't that be profoundly life-changing to utilize that power to make the best partners with your brain?
This rare kind of power is a mindset. The way you think, the way you perceive and handle both the world around you and your inner reality, will ultimately determine the quality of your life. A single shift in your perception can trigger meaningful results. Life can be tough. Whenever we turn, there are obstacles blocking our way. Some are caused by our environment and some by ourselves. Yet, we all know people who are able to overcome them consistently, and, simply speaking, become successful. And stay there! What really elevates a regular Joe or Jane to superhero status is the laser-sharp focus, perseverance, and the ability to keep on going when everyone else would have quit. I have, for a long time, studied the lives of the most disciplined people on this planet. In this book, you are going to learn their secrets. No matter if your goals are financial, sport, relationship, or habit-changing oriented, this book covers it all. Today, I want to share with you the science-based insights and field-tested methods that have helped me, my friends, and my clients change their lives and become real-life go-getters.

Disappointed in some outdated concepts.
Always sad to leave poor review but, although some good common sense and insight is here I found the inaccuracies and old school thinking about a lot of brain & behaviour very disheartening.
Although these words were not used I found a lot of the book categorized behaviours as good or bad. It is dedicated to the neurotypical brain, often implying , or in some cases saying outright that undisciplined behaviour is lazy, and even intentional.
While I find value in many of the practices the author suggests the underlying concepts seem to be stuck in in some very antiquated ways of thinking - the kind that has lead to unhealthy stereotypes that many mental health professionals & educators are working against.
I am not adversed to looking into some of his other books but I’ll approach them with a bit of caution.

This book really made me rethink a lot of things I thought I knew about how to be more productive and actually stick to my goals. It helped put me on the right track and focus inward to work towards skills that I never put much thought into like meditation and mindfulness. What I got from this book really changed a lot of things in my life for the better and now I’m teaching others about the things I’ve learned so it can help them as well.

Answers questions and doubts about self discipline
Would you listen to Self-Discipline again? Why?
Yes, great book. Ian Tuhovsky nails every question I had on self discipline and is clear not to confuse "willpower" with self discipline. From other books I have read including this one, willpower is temporary and it is important to understand the difference. Ian goes into detail to answer questions such as how to use self discipline, and why. Also how to prevent burnout and meditate.
Any additional comments?
As a full time employee and part time grad student self discipline is a must have. I have used the concepts in this book to assure I am completing tasks for work as well as assuring I have time for family, prayer, and exercise. Sometimes failure does happen, but as Ian mentioned in his book to move forward and not dwell on the past.

An Excellent Self Help Book
I have listened to this book twice since I purchased it recently and enjoyed both times. I really like the fact that the book references to the Zen and Present moment awareness. Within the past 4-5 years I have started my journey in trying to discover the Zen way of living. While I am not an expert in knowing or even completely following the Zen way of living, it certainly impacts my attention and interest positively, every time I read or listen to a book that references it it. This is because I can confidently claim that my life and self discipline has been improved tremendously with as little as I know and practice the reality of life the Zen teaching has introduced me.
Great Book Ian Tuhovsky. The world needs more folks like you.

If you could sum up Self-Discipline in three words, what would they be?

What does Randy Streu bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Randy Streu did a great job! His narration is top notch. He sounds so convincing that makes you want to listen!
Any additional comments?
We all make choices every day, why not make the right ones? It was very liberating to realize that even though motivation is a great key to success, the times when we don’t feel motivated, we can still make the right choice in order to accomplish our dreams. Let’s keep the momentum!

Interesting Concepts
I got this ARC via audiobook boom. The concepts and exercises presented in this volume were indeed interesting and most were doable. Some left me wondering who would do them and why. Overall they could help as long as one understands that there is room for improvement but we are not the ones totally in charge. We are indeed created beings who are a result of a higher power than ourselves.
