Publisher's Summary

A book for clinicians and clients to use together that explains key concepts of body psychotherapy.

Written for therapists and clients to explore together in therapy, this book is a practical guide to the language of the body. It begins with a section that orients therapists and clients to the volume and how to use it, followed by an overview of the role of the brain and the use of mindfulness. The last three sections are organized according to a phase approach to therapy, focusing first on developing personal resources, particularly somatic ones; second on utilizing a bottom-up, somatic approach to memory; and third on exploring the impact of attachment on procedural learning, emotional biases, and cognitive distortions.

The concepts and interventions introduced in this book are designed as an adjunct to, and in support of, other methods of treatment rather than as a stand-alone treatment or manualized approach. By drawing on the therapeutic relationship and adjusting interventions to the particular needs of each client, thoughtful attention to what is being spoken beneath the words through the body can heighten the intimacy of the therapist/client journey and help change take place more easily in the hidden recesses of the self.

second most insightful book on trauma I've read

This is the first book on trauma that has given me more insight and compassion on how and why I have developed so many maladaptive patterns and behaviours. The accompanying exercises, although difficult, have led to a greater understanding of my strengths and also the areas in which I need to delve deeper. Very helpful and easy for anyone to understand.

great information

this book is truly packed with great information about helping individuals see the relationship between their body's, habits, past history and offering some hope for some felt to be stuck in their difficulties. great comprehensive pdf included as well. so much information here I may have to order the written book as well to highlight and refer back. it can be a bit dry and almost boring at times but maybe that was just my mood that day. the pdf also was not printable which was annoying. overall great listen.

Great book, but not able to print PDF

Great material. Unable to print the worksheets and any of the PDF (Audible representative said that it was not possible to print). If anyone was able to figure out how to print or the publisher/authors see this, please write a response so I can use the material in this book properly.

Heavily didactic but valuable for clinicians

I rarely use worksheets as a clinician, but I will very likely use the supplemental ones from this book. The work of Patricia Ogden and others whose methods converge with hers can and should revolutionize the field of psychotherapy, and with Janina Fisher, she created a training masterpiece. I don't usually enjoy reading materials as didactic and workbook oriented, and though this book is like that, the skillset being taught here is one that works and needs to be taught in a way that cannot be mistaken, and I believe that is what Fisher and Ogden are doing here. when I was explaining it to one of my colleagues, she told me how much she would appreciate that sort of book, and she plans to start reading it soon as well. Ogden's utilization of the innate wisdom of the body, leveraging a therapeutic paradigm that is acceptable across the board to clinicians is likely a powerful way to bridge the gap between a world that usually evokes images of beaded curtains and incense burning and the sterile hallways of hospitals. I have used the methods that she teaches, and they work rapidly and deeply without giving up the expected measure of safety that most of us, as clinicians, want to bring into our practices.

Narrator lkind of bland but easy to understand. Provides a comprehensive overview of trauma and attachment as well as numerous interventions and frameworks. Finding it VERY HELPFUL!

We didn’t they pick a different narrator!

I love the material in the book but if I were to read it while driving I would fall asleep at the wheel the voice is very monotone it sounds like the person who does emergency announcements just a little better than a robot.

Excellent book very useful for clinicians

This book as an integrative perspective on psychotherapy. The content is very rich and every bit is useful. A very convincing approach to psychotherapy. Thank you

Incredible material, soporific performance

I’m so disappointed. I do better with audio books than I do reading them, but I’m less than an hour in, and I’m giving up. The performance is literally sleep-inducing. Guess I’ll get a print version.

Intolerable Narration

This is one of the more disappointing offerings from Audible, who completely misses the point that it's specifically designed to appeal to the readers EAR. The book, which promises amazing material from 2 giants in the field, completely disregards that and provides material narrated by an obvious robot. There is zero inflection, emotion, or personal quality to the narrating. This is so ironic given that both authors speak eloquently about the effect sound has on the nervous system due to interactions with the ear drum and cranial nerve X. Amazon should reward every Audible customer with a free download of this book.

Robot reader but fantastic material!

If you don’t mind the AI reading, you should be fine. The material itself is excellent.

Love the work-narrator is VERY monotoned

The work itself is great & very useful. I’m so thankful to the authors for their work.
The narrator was very monotoned throughout and hard to listen to. I think I fell asleep every time. I somehow got through it.
Again, the work is great. I incorporate the work regularly.
