Ice-T here offers his hip-hop generation’s Horatio Alger story: the narrative of an orphaned child who, drawn inexorably into a harrowing life of crime, ultimately turns away from the streets and, through self-discipline and a single-minded work ethic, forges a path to international fame as a musician and film-and-television star.

Fat Joe is a hip-hop legend, but this is not a tale of celebrity; it is the story of Joseph Cartagena, a kid who came of age in the South Bronx during its darkest years of drugs, violence, and abandonment, and how he navigated that traumatizing landscape until he found—through art, friendship, luck, and will—a rocky path to a different life. This memoir, written in Joe’s own intensely compelling voice, moves with the momentum of pulp fiction, but underneath the tragicomedy and riveting tales of the streets and the industry is a thought-provoking story about a generation of survivors.

Who could forget the sexy "Cherry Pie" girl from hair metal band Warrant's infamous music video? Bobbie Brown became a bona fide vixen for her playful role as the object of lead singer Jani Lane's desires. With her windblown peroxide mane, seductive scarlet lips, and flirtatious curves, she epitomized every man's fantasy. But the wide-eyed Louisiana beauty queen's own dreams of making it big in Los Angeles were about to be derailed by her rock-and-roll lifestyle.

His real name was Earl Simmons. As a child, he placed higher on tests than his fellow students and liked to spend mornings with his mother and sisters playing games and making pancakes. But for young Earl - a boy growing up on the streets of Yonkers, New York - that kind of childhood didn’t last long. Beatings, abuse, and neglect very soon had him moving on to other things, like robbing, stealing, drugs, and, eventually, jail. Along the way, however, he found a talent and a passion for rhyme.

Description
Award-winning actor, rapper, and producer Ice-T unveils a compelling memoir of his early life robbing jewelry stores until he found fame and fortune—while a handful of bad choices sent his former crime partner down an incredibly different path.
Ice-T rose to fame in the late 1980s, earning acclaim for his music before going on to enthrall television audiences as Odafin “Fin” Tutuola in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. But it could have gone much differently.
In this “poignant and powerful” (Library Journal, starred review) memoir, Ice-T and Spike, his former crime partner—collaborating with New York Times bestselling author Douglas Century—relate the shocking stories of their shared pasts, and how just a handful of decisions led to their incredibly different lives. Both grew up in violent, gang-controlled Los Angeles neighborhoods and worked together to orchestrate a series of jewelry heists.
But while Ice-T was discovered rapping in a club and got his first record deal, Spike was caught for a jewelry robbery and did three years in prison. As his music career began to take off, Ice made the decision to abandon the criminal life; Spike continued to plan increasingly ingenious and risky jewel heists. And in 1992, after one of Spike’s robberies ended tragically, he was sentenced to thirty-five years to life. While he sat behind bars, he watched his former partner rise to fame in music, movies, and television.
“Propulsive” (Publishers Weekly, starred review), timely, and thoughtful, two men with two very different lives reveal how their paths might have very well been reversed if they made different choices. All it took was a split decision.
Featuring an exclusive conversation with Ice-T, Spike, and Douglas Century!

Best audio book I have ever listened to!
Thank you to Ice T, Spike and Doug for bringing us this amazing story. I was glued to this audio book from beginning to end. at first I thought it was just a story about Ice T (whom is my favorite rapper of all time) but to my wonderful surprise I learned about Spike story as well which is heart wrenching (leaving me in tears at some points. the narrations from Ice T and Spike is top shelf! it's like listening to a movie (even better than a movie) so many life lessons to take away from this book. greed, love, hate, survival, redemption, loyalty, friendship and extended family. I was very sad when it was over but very happy how the story turned out. I will search for more books from Ice T and Doug. money well spent. Thanks to this book I now have a new level of respect for my man Ice. Truly a godsend to anyone who was lucky enough to have met him. Thank you Spike for sharing journey with us. your story will undoubtedly helps so many people. hope you wrote another book!

This book is a great decision
The fast paced narrative unfold like the lives lived. Ice-t and Spike deliver a compelling story of their lives together. Once I started this book I couldn't stop. I listen to the music of Ice-t growing up, I was immersed in a world that I thought was fantasy, based on my white suburban reality, the truth is- the music is authentic and the stories are real like the people telling them. I'm definitely recommend this.

Great Read!
Loved this book! It’s the furthest away from my upbringing but the messaging is universal! The Storting telling was amazing and I felt everything both these guys felt! We travel the world to visit other cultures but there’s so much in our own backyard to discover how others are living and what their challenges and wins are!

Amazing!!
I didn’t know what to expect with this book, I’m a huge Law & Order fan and bought the audio book for a road trip out of solidarity for my favourite show. I was pleasantly surprised and blown away at how beautifully both stories/perspectives were woven together! I finished the book in a day and a half!
I laughed, I cried and I will be listening to the book for a second time to make sure I didn’t miss anything!
Highly recommend!

Worth it just for the narration
As a fan it was just listening to Ice narrate was entertaining enough for me. That being said, the book provides an interesting perspective into a specific slice of history that as a kid growing up in the 80’s and 90’s I found appealing. Above that, the authors really do have a positive message that many could benefit from. Even if you aren’t necessarily a fan of the music, the message transcends and it really does touch on an important piece of history during that era delving into LA gangs and poultice brutality.
