Publisher's Summary

Do you want to successfully self-publish in eBook, print, or audiobook formats?

There are thousands of new books being published every day, but many self-published books quickly sink to the bottom of the pile.

Many authors are frustrated because there are so many options for self-publishing, and they don't know which one to choose or what will be best for their book.

Others spend thousands of dollars to publish and end up brokenhearted with the result.

But it doesn't have to be this way.

I've spent the last seven years self-publishing best-selling fiction and nonfiction books and in 2011, I left my day job to become a full-time author entrepreneur. I've made lots of mistakes along the way, but through the process of self-publishing 17 books, I've learned the most effective way to publish and market your books. In this book, I'll share everything with you.

The book includes:

  • What you need to know before you self-publish
  • Why self-publishing an eBook is a good idea
  • How to format an eBook
  • Exclusivity and going direct
  • How to self-publish an eBook
  • Why self-publish a print book
  • Print-on-demand will change your life
  • What you need to know before you print
  • How to self-publish a print book
  • What to do if you want help with the publishing process
  • How to self-publish an audiobook
  • After self-publishing
  • How much does it cost to self-publish?
  • How do you get paid when you self-publish?
  • Book marketing principles
  • How to market fiction
  • How to market nonfiction

Great reference.

It helps a lot. Love the information and the narrator. I’m eager to apply this ASAP.

A Good Place to Start...

This, as you can probably tell by the length, is mostly an introduction. There are some really important and strong points in the book, for example how paid marketing is temporary and dries up almost immediately after you stop paying for it. There is some useful points on mindset, and a lot of basics useful for beginners.

There's also a lot of pitching and self promotion. This is apparently very common in books nowadays where you're going to get multiple links to the author's website and other materials that the offers, both free and paid. It's so commonplace that you're probably harduous to it but regardless it irritates me to no end and so I'm mentioning it as an unfortunate grating point. At the end of many sections you will be linked to no doubt useful sections of the author's website. I think that despite my disdain for this approach ultimately they are useful and therefore could be seen as a positive note. For example, I personally will no doubt be checking out Penn's free podcast, and her longer book on marketing.

Ultimately this is a taste test and if you intend to get very serious about publishing and marketing I would recommend you buy a longer book perhaps from this author from a different one. The information density is kind of all over the place so despite its length it's actually not as concise as the work of, for example, Chris Fox, who makes similarly-lengthed nonfiction for writers, but promises to get to the point—and delivers useful content in a short amount of time.

I think that if you're not sure if this is the path you want to follow, or you want a taste of Joanna Penn's approach to things, this is a great place to start. And so despite the fact that I clearly was looking for more, this might be right up your own alley. 3.5/5

Best for beginners

Lots of practical advice for absolute beginners to self-publishing. If you've done your research already or listen to her podcast regularly this probably is too basic. I didn't really learn anything new but can see this being a good resource for an inspiring indie publisher who doesn't know how to get started. Also has tips for non-fiction writers too. Not applicable to me but others may appreciate that.
