About this listen

The Red Army had much to avenge when it finally reached the frontiers of the Third Reich in January 1945. Frenzied by their terrible experiences with Wehrmacht and SS brutality, they wreaked havoc - tanks crushing refugee columns, mass rape, pillage, and unimaginable destruction. Hundreds of thousands of women and children froze to death or were massacred; more than seven million fled westward from the fury of the Red Army. It was the most terrifying example of fire and sword ever known.

Antony Beevor has reconstructed the experiences of those millions caught up in the nightmare of the Third Reich's final collapse. The Fall of Berlin is a terrible story of pride, stupidity, fanaticism, revenge, and savagery, yet it is also one of astonishing endurance, self-sacrifice, and survival against all odds.

I love WWII history. This is the best book about the end of the war that I’ve ever read.

Excellent and thorough!

A good historical recount of WWII and the German Russian conflict. I recommend for history buffs.

A good read

Antony Beevor presents the fanaticism, brutality, cruelty and moments of kindness displayed by each side in the last days of the European World War II. He shies away from nothing. He also presents the macro picture of the armies movements, victories and destruction on both sides. Filled with facts, this books adds to the understanding of what came before and what came after the fall of Berlin.

It would have been interesting had Beevor not only analyzed the comportment of the Soviet armies in the context of having followed upon the brutality of the German armies in the Soviet Union. This is the Soviet apologist propaganda for excusing the murder, rape and pillage by its armies in Germany, overlooking that those actions started in Poland before the Soviet armies even got to Germany. Beevor describes how the Poles were subjected to much of the same as the Germans. It would have been even more interesting had he discussed the fact that orders for rape and pillage of Germany had been given in 1941 by the Soviet leaders when they were on the cusp of invading Germany but were beaten to the punch by Hitler by two weeks (see Victor Suvorov's book "Icebreaker: Who Started the Second World War?") Those orders were given by the Soviets even before they were attacked by Germany! It would also have been even more interesting had he discussed how conquering half of Germany was Stalin being forced to settle for much less than his goal from World War II, which was to conquer all of Europe (or as Stalin would say to "liberate all of Europe's proletariat from the yoke of capitalism". (c.f. Suvorov ibid.)

Well presented. Well read. I a have enjoyed most of Beevor's work for many years. I understand why he can no longer visit Russia. Too many rapes committed by Red Army, He is not the only historian who has reported such atrocities.. I would recommend all of his books. Suggest you review his lectures on YouTube for greater understanding.

Brutal
