Publisher's Summary

From the author of the New York Times and USA Today best-selling novel The Alice Network comes another fascinating historical novel about a battle-haunted English journalist and a Russian female bomber pilot who join forces to track the Huntress, a Nazi war criminal gone to ground in America.

In the aftermath of war, the hunter becomes the hunted....

Bold and fearless, Nina Markova always dreamed of flying. When the Nazis attack the Soviet Union, she risks everything to join the legendary Night Witches, an all-female night bomber regiment wreaking havoc on the invading Germans. When she is stranded behind enemy lines, Nina becomes the prey of a lethal Nazi murderess known as the Huntress, and only Nina's bravery and cunning will keep her alive.

Transformed by the horrors he witnessed from Omaha Beach to the Nuremberg Trials, British war correspondent Ian Graham has become a Nazi hunter. Yet one target eludes him: a vicious predator known as the Huntress. To find her, the fierce, disciplined investigator joins forces with the only witness to escape the Huntress alive: the brazen, cocksure Nina. But a shared secret could derail their mission unless Ian and Nina force themselves to confront it.

Growing up in post-war Boston, 17-year-old Jordan McBride is determined to become a photographer. When her long-widowed father unexpectedly comes home with a new fiancée, Jordan is thrilled. But there is something disconcerting about the soft-spoken German widow. Certain that danger is lurking, Jordan begins to delve into her new stepmother’s past - only to discover that there are mysteries buried deep in her family...secrets that may threaten all Jordan holds dear.

In this immersive, heart-wrenching story, Kate Quinn illuminates the consequences of war on individual lives, and the price we pay to seek justice and truth.

Featured Article: The Best Female Narrators You Can Listen To All Day

When considering a new audiobook, one of the biggest questions listeners have is whether they’ll enjoy the narration style. This is understandable as audiobooks span at least a few hours, and sticking with one person’s voice for that period can feel like a big commitment. Luckily, there are so many excellent voice actors performing audiobooks that you might just find yourself gravitating to certain audiobooks based solely on the narrator’s strength.

Narrator kills it, decent story

I loved this audiobook, mostly thanks to the amazing narrator. She can switch between accents and gender flawlessly. Made for great listening. The story was pretty good too. If you read The Alice Network it had a similar vibe. But overall I highly recommend. Wish there was a sequel, mostly because I want more Nina.

Intuitive!

This book is wonderful. Each character’s flashback leading up to the present moment is easy to follow, and seamless. As you finish reading a chapter and think of a character and how their story adds to the rhetoric, it’s as if Quinn reads your mind and their name heads the next chapter.

I love her work!

Great Book

I found it hard to get into at the beginning, but was taking away and couldn't put it down. Made me want to research about the history of the Russians in WW2 and the history of female fighters in the war. highly recommend.

Fantastic stories - narration distracting

The book: very well written though a little lurid with a bit of a hollywood-simplicity feel. Characters to really like (or hate), exceptional scene and dialog control with a great feel and flow. I especially enjoyed the strong female pro(an)tagonists. A sweeping historical drama that feels very encompassing, from the war-time cold greyness of Soviet austerity to the green lush fullness of Boston in the springtime.
The performance: I struggled with Saskia Maarleveld's voicings. During narration, I was fine with description and story but during dialog, especially men's voices, I was distracted by her attempts. The accents were good, she has fine control of pitch , and she kept characters separated well but when imitating men's voices, it came across comically often pulling me out of the story.

Overall: A perfect summer read. I fully recommend this book, either to read or to listen; be prepared to live with the urge to laugh a bit when Maarleveld imitates a gruff man's voice.
