Would be great if it wasn't LitRPG

I enjoyed most of listening to this, and the reader did a fine job, and the story is good, but I just can't do LitRPGs in Audiobook format. I stopped after only a couple chapters and downloaded the book and read it normally. Every time I had to listen to them read out the character status page or all the details of every item picked up, I died a little inside, but none of that is the fault of the author or the reader, that's just a problem with all audiobooks in this particular subgenre

Not for me

I suppose I just didn't understand what litRPG was when I dove into this, so this isn't to say that the content wouldn't be what someone else is looking for, I just believe the story would benefit from not being interrupted by pings and notifications constantly reminding you that the character is not in an organic world/realm. The constant forced humour from the main character seems plainly out of character, how quickly he adapts and accepts to being thrown into a new world with no idea of how to leave is unbelievable, and any attempts to make him relatable make me want to distance myself from that person. The only time he had ever swung his fists were at "frat boys when they got too close to his female friends"? come on...

Amazing!

A wonderful start to a series that I have no doubt will be great. The level up sounds are an acquired taste, but fit given the genre. I am now fully in love with the LITRPG genre after listening to this book. It fuses my love of Fantasy and Video games perfectly. It also makes me want to log onto my PC and embark on another ESO quest.

The narrator was amazing with the different characters, and.the writer is clearly skilled at story telling. I've already procured book 2, and will be starting it immediately.

Also, as a side note, for those who are put off by the level up noises, the best I can tell you is that I was too at first, but they decrease in frequency and become tolerable as an acquired taste.

Fun listen

Very enjoyable story and characters. The world and rpg elements are well done. Only issue being the repetative pop ups like race info and lvl up prompts. Granted it was originally a book so they would be easy to glance over, as an audiobook it would have been best to tone it down. That includes the annoying dings and beeps everytime something gets found or seen. Usually this would take me right out of the story but it's a minor issue next to the quality of the material. Nick podehl does an amazing job as expected of a top tier narrator, definitely my favorite. Great experience all around I'd recommend it to anyone who likes fantasy and doesn't despise stats.

worst thing I've ever read.

the concept of this book is good, but the writing, characters, and overall plot are garbage. it's only saving grace is that the narrator is quite good. do not buy.

On the fence at first.

I was on the fence about this book to start, and honestly if it wasn't for nick podhel I might not have given it more of a chance. The stat sheet read outs are tedious, and better meant for books. But the story is fun, Richter is a fun character to get to know and I'm somehow now on the 4th book in as many weeks. Each book leaves you wanting more. They are also not long or particularly difficult and in depth booms, but engaging enough to listen to for the time, and the world-building through quests and mishaps keeps it interesting. And as a fan of RPGs it's a cool take on the genre.

Unbelievable series

First review I have ever written, but I wanted to give kudos to the author and narrator. Hard to believe that Dr. Kong was writing this in the evenings while still maintaining a busy physician practice during the day. Despite being self-published, the book was remarkably polished and the creativity and depth of The Land is truly something to behold (the next 6 books are just as good). And Nick Podehl's ability to create specific voices for all of the characters, then maintain those flawlessly throughout the lengthy books is Oscar-worthy.

Wow, it's been a while.

So it has been a while since I've read a book like this. I can't even begin to explain the mental focused that this audio book envokes from me. The characters are so realistic, the main character especially, he is someone I can really relate to at least 70%. The story makes me curious and puts me on edge. I do have question but I have faith that they will be answered in the upcoming issues. Issues that I will be investing in as it is absolutely worth it.

Feels Like A Real Life Game

It’s a really great book.

It feels like the main character is in a vast world filled with thousands of creatures. This book sort of reminded me of the game “Breath of the Wild” The adventure and action in this book is fantastic.

I know some people hate the lists but it’s pretty fun to know the information of the weapons and the creatures. As I said before it kind of feels like a Zelda game. In addition the part where it says “who are you again?” Always cracks me up.

Not What I Expected, but SO GOOD!!!

When people think of a novel they many times see the normal arc of intro, conflict, climax, and resolution. This book takes that concept and throws it to the wind! It builds upon it self with many different stories, all having there own arcs, all at once. These stories intertwine in a way that feels natural and fluid. Also if you are like me and love to see things grow from humble beginnings to something spectacular than you will absolutely love this book!

Where has this been my whole life!

I cannot believe i have never heard of this genre and book before. The author has such a genuine feel for his story and it's refreshing to see a story without compromises.Anyone who is a fan of games, fantasy, anime or just really good story telling will love this series.

Difficult to get through

Pretty cringey stuff. The writing style is more geared towards YA and the story details are boring.

Stellar Narration! Style tailored to Gamers

I'm a gamer. I drove from Oregon to New Jersey in a week... and driving 10 hours a day was boring! I listened to 3 books, a ton of NPR and I was looking for something different. I missed my games!

I already listened to another litrpg, the GOD AWFUL, "Tamer: King of Dinosaurs" and needed to try something proven... not what was clearly a grown man's pathetic teenage sex fantasy.

I was not disappointed by this book.

Hear me out. If you're a gamer you'll know what I'm talking about: Sometimes when you're playing games more than living a normal life, gaming elements start to incorporate into your dreams. You'll have a top-down view, a HUD, or an inventory in your dreams. Sometimes you'll loot something like a tree stump in the middle of nightmare, and when you wake up... you kind of wish you were still dreaming. When games mix into your dreams, you get the best out of both the real world and the virtual world!

That's what makes LitRPG so cool!

The main character gets sucked into a world governed by game mechanics, and rather than (more realistically) lament losing everything he's ever known or loved... he just sort of rolls with it! Haha! "Hmmm that was wierd. Ooh there's a person with a quest notification over her head... guess I better check it out!" Weeks later he's made friends, started a village, and only occasionally has he reminisced about his old Earth life... not ONCE does he ask, how did I get here and how the fuck do I get out? He's pretty much in heaven.

It does get a little exhausting listening to each and every stat block listed out... or all the loot descriptions... but like I said, the narrator is stellar. Occasionally I wondered if they got a different actor for certain characters... but no, he's just that versatile.

This is not Game of Thrones. This is not Harry Potter... This is like... maybe an manga novella?? I've never read one of those sooooo yeah. This is light reading to say the least. Young Adult for sure... but fun enough for this 37 y.o. gamer ;)
