About this listen
From New York Times best-selling author Michael Connelly, a new thriller introducing a driven young detective trying to prove herself in the LAPD.
Renée Ballard works the night shift in Hollywood, beginning many investigations but finishing none, as each morning she turns her cases over to day shift detectives. A once up-and-coming detective, she's been given this beat as punishment after filing a sexual harassment complaint against a supervisor.
But one night she catches two cases she doesn't want to part with: the brutal beating of a prostitute left for dead in a parking lot and the killing of a young woman in a nightclub shooting. Ballard is determined not to give up at dawn. Against orders and her own partner's wishes, she works both cases by day while maintaining her shift by night. As the cases entwine, they pull her closer to her own demons and the reason she won't give up her job, no matter what the department throws at her.

Story
When Boady Sanden first receives the case of Elijah Matthews, he’s certain there’s not much he can do. Elijah, who believes himself to be a prophet, has been locked up in a psychiatric hospital for the past four years, convicted of brutally murdering the pastor of a megachurch. But as a law professor working for the Innocence Project, Boady agrees to look into Elijah’s file. When he does, he is alarmed to find threads that lead back to the death of his colleague and friend, Ben Pruitt, a man shot to death four years earlier in Boady’s own home.

Whitney had some misgivings when she dropped her increasingly moody teenage daughter, Amelia, off at Lauren’s house. She’d never met the parents, and usually she’d go in, but Amelia clearly wasn’t going to let something so humiliating happen, so instead Whitney waved to her daughter before pulling away from the little house with the roses in front. But when she goes back the next day, an elderly couple answers the door - Amelia and Lauren aren’t there, and this couple swears they never were, that she’s at the wrong house.

But no one is more surprised than Mal, now the owner of the Old Devils Bookstore in Boston, when an FBI agent comes knocking on his door one snowy day in February. She’s looking for information about a series of unsolved murders that look eerily similar to the killings on Mal’s old list. And the FBI agent isn’t the only one interested in this bookseller.

One weekend, while Andrew Mason was on a fishing trip, his wife, Brie, vanished without a trace. Most everyone assumed Andy had got away with murder—it’s always the husband, isn’t it?—but the police could never build a strong case against him. Good story but absolutely the worst narrator ever
Good Michael Connelly story. I like Renee Ballard’s character, she’s pretty complex and I look forward to seeing how he develops her. Nice plot twist at the end.
But the narrator was terrible. It was a very flat delivery, which completely robbed the story of any excitement or emotion. Further, her enunciation and pronunciation were awful. You’d think an audiobook reader would be chosen based on their ability to read clearly and actually pronounce words correctly... but in this case you’d be wrong.
I’d recommend buying the book instead svdcreadjng it yourself, and choosing a different audiobook.

a new take on an old tale
it's tough to have a new tale to tell in cop stories nowadays. The late Show managed to give me a fresh perspective on a tried and true cop drama by having a modern setting. There's none of the usual "why didn't he just google that" or "no one caught a picture of the guy on a phone camera?" but the story remains interesting and engaging to listen to. By far the most interesting part of the story is Renee, the detective through whom we experience the narrative. A female experience in the standard cop story leads to a fresh take that I personally found shockingly unfamiliar. This leads to moments that may be challenging to listen through but those moments, to me, were this book really has something new to deliver.

Boring Narrator
This was disappointingly cookie cutter book with a narrator who sounded like she was reading a shopping list. It was really hard for me to get to the end of this book but I made it. Just a sigh that it was over.

Worst narrator ever!
A decent procedural with the usual Connolly twists but really….where did they get this narrator? One reviewer on here really nailed it when they said she reads the text like a shopping list! Absolutely dreadfully flat, boring intonation with no hint of the drama or any interesting inflections in her voice. I don’t want to be mean, but it boggles my mind that this lady nabbed such a prestigious job in such a competitive field. All I can say is it’s a tribute to Connolly’s story telling that I stayed with it till the end.

Excellence across the board
I love the world Michael Connelly has created, Narrator was great, sets the pace...knows when to "voice act" and when pull back and just Narrate the story.
Story just hooks you in, and you are invested in everything in this world, not just the main character. One of the best Listens i had this year

Love Michael Connelly and now Renee Ballard!!
I’m a longtime fan of Michael Connelly and all his characters: Bosch, Haller, and now Ballard!! I have read and re-read all of them. Can’t begin to pick favourites - that’s like choosing a fave child. Each one is so well developed and different, yet all still carry the same “Connelly traits” that make them so enjoyable, never predictable.
The Late Show is the character Renee Ballard’s debut, and it doesn’t disappoint. Ballard is tough, smart, fiercely loyal to her beliefs and her family. She’s dogged, independent, and still knows when to play by the rules in order to get the job done.
I CAN NOT WAIT!!!! For Connelly’s next instalment, when Ballard and Bosch team up. Knowing these two characters as I do, I know it will be EPIC!!
