À propos de cet audio

On just another average day, Jake finds himself in a forest filled with monsters, dangers, and opportunity....

It was a day like any other when suddenly the world changed. The universe reached a threshold humanity didn’t even know existed, and it was time to finally be integrated into the vast multiverse. A place where power is the only thing anyone can truly rely on.

Jake, a seemingly average office worker, finds himself thrust into this new world. Into a tutorial filled with dangers and opportunities.

His new reality should breed fear and concern. His fellow coworkers falter at every turn. Jake, however, finds himself thriving.

Perhaps... This is the world Jake was meant to be born in.

This LitRPG offering penned by "Zogarth" follows a borderline sociopath named 'Jake Fayne' (a guy who kills with zero conscience and quite happily goes solo).. blessed early on with an unusual "Spider-Sense" globe-of-perception ability that allows him to survive attacks while adjusting to a new D&D-like reality imposed by the mysterious "System", advancing himself as a specialist archer/poisoner-alchemist with the help of in-game dieties granting powers, and occasionally teaming up with former real-life work colleagues/erstwhile enemies (albeit whatever their morals - he genuinely doesn't care). At the same time, a character unhelpfully named 'Jacob' navigates the world from a more philosophical perspective.
The game mechanics are quite cookie-cutter and the dynamics of the RPG world (including intermittent tutorials + updates) are poorly-explored, but the vocabulary/prose is capable, the description is vivid, skills/spells/upgrades/monsters are imaginative, and the action is well-choreographed. I further appreciated the absence of the ego-driven IRL-nerd now-super-powerful "look at me!" and/or false-modesty OP hero-complex motivations & harem nonsense that plague this genre of fantasy story. I enjoyed the approach.

As to presentation: Travis Baldree is excellent at reading books of this type. His natural timbre is borderline immature - often sounding as though a 15-year-old is narrating the book - but his diction, cadence, tone, and voice-acting are spot-on. Aethon Audio Inc. did a great job casting the project.

Altogether, I give this first book in 'The Primal Hunter' series 7.5 stars out of 10. I am pleased to have gotten the audiobook on sale - it was a fantastic listening experience to occupy a few quiet afternoons - but actually find series like 'He Who Fights With Monsters' and any of the 'Viridian Gate Online' offerings quite a bit better of an investment if I'm paying full price (similar quality but socially-aware characters with a conscience).

[NOTE: The Metagame notifications in this book ("e.g. *DING* Your alchemy score rose to level 27") and all-too-frequent Character Sheet updates are pretty intrusive. That would be just fine in a text version of a LitRPG book, but straight-up annoying in the audiobook format. On the other hand, the Jake/Jacob dynamic promises some interesting potential plotlines if you decide to get into the series. I will be listening to something else]
