Sir Jonathan (born 21 July 1934) is a British director of opera, theatre, and film as well as a television presenter, humourist, sculptor, and medical Doctor. He ran the Old Vic Theatre and was an associate director of the Royal National Theatre.
His opera productions include his famous Mafia-styled staging of Verdi's Rigoletto. He is today perhaps known as much for being a public intellectual as he is for his directing.
