Publisher's Summary

Hugo Award Winner for Best Series

A novella set in the hard-scrabble world of James S. A. Corey's NYT best-selling Expanse series, The Vital Abyss is the secret history of the cataclysmic events that occurred on Eros station, and the revelation of what came after...Now a Prime Original series.

Somewhere in the vast expanse of space, a group of prisoners lives in permanent captivity.

The only company they have is each other and the Belters who guard them. The only stories they know are the triumphs and crimes that brought them there. The only future they see is an empty life in an enormous room.

And then the man from Mars came along...

Fills in more of the story and characters

I liked it as it explains some things. For some reason I forgot where exactly this story fits as I read it at the end after all books and stories so I was a bit lots at the beginning.

Skipable

The writing was good, just like all the books before it... however it follows the scientists who set up the Eros experiment decades after the fact. Which after finishing the next two books, didn’t include anything from this book... making it completely pointless... unless of course getting to know random side characters that have zero relevance to the current story is your thing, I’d say save your credits...

Interesting short

Great tale. Interesting short story based in a prison and the dynamics to get info concerning prot-molecule.

Weakest of the novellas

I felt that nothing happened in this story. From the high action of the other books and time spent with characters I have grown to love this was boring. It was the life story of a character I don’t care about. You can easily skip this book and not miss out on anything.
