Story
We often treat the word capacity as if it were a natural law of limitation. Unfortunately most of us are much more comfortable defining what we perceive as off limits rather than what's really possible. Could it be that many of us have failed to expand our potential because we have allowed what we perceive as capacity to define us? What if our limits are not really our limits?

By starting with outcomes instead of processes, the most effective companies understand what people want to do and why they aren't already doing it, then build products and services to bridge the gap. Wallaert underscores with clarity and humor how this approach can improve the way we work and live.

That’s important, because if we’re wrong on this crucial question, then we have zero chance of getting significantly better at anything we care about. Happily, the real source of great performance is no longer a mystery. Much of what we hear about who gets to the top, and how, is wrong. Those who become chief executives set their sights on the C-suite at an early age. In fact, over 70 percent of the CEOs didn't have designs on the corner office until later in their careers. You must graduate from an elite college. In fact, only seven percent of CEOs in the dataset are Ivy League graduates - and eight percent didn't graduate from college at all. To become a CEO you need a flawless résumé. The reality: 45 percent of CEO candidates had at least one major career blowup.

Publisher's Summary
Based on his TEDx talk "Everyday Leadership (the Lollipop Moment)"—voted one of the 15 most inspirational TED talks of all time—This Is Day One is leadership expert Drew Dudley's guide to cultivating the behaviors that will help you to succeed and empower those around you.
If you're intimidated by the mystique surrounding leadership, this book is for you. Dudley simplifies leadership without denying its complexity, demonstrating that leadership in all its forms begins at the same clear and accessible place for everyone: what he calls "Day One."
Day One is when you discover, define, and start to consistently deliver on your foundational leadership values. Living that day over and over is what creates leaders, and Dudley provides the key tools necessary to craft and commit to your own personal Day One, including:
- A step-by-step process designed to surface your core leadership values and embed them into your daily behavior
- A roadmap to behavioral changes proven to increase commitment, pride, productivity, and happiness
- Insights into key leadership values that drive performance and impact
Sharing the process that led him through battles with alcohol, obesity, and personal tragedy, Dudley shows you how to develop a relentless commitment to the daily behaviors that will make you a better executive, coach, or teacher, and how you can inspire others to do the same.
Most of the leadership on the planet comes from people who don't see themselves as leaders. This Is Day One shows you how to start changing that. Through the insights of leaders of all types—CEOs, elite athletes, cab drivers, custodians, and everyone in between—Dudley helps you understand what your Day One needs to look like, reminds you why you're a leader, and makes clear what you can do about it—starting today, on Day One.
PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying PDF will be available in your Audible Library along with the audio.
What the critics say
"If you're looking for a refreshing and new take on leadership, look no further than This Is Day One. It provides the reader with opportunities to implement its systems in everyday situations - from your interactions with a barista at your coffee shop to a meeting with your CEO. Dudley provides the reader with easy-to-understand stories, offering us tools we can adopt immediately. I recommend this book to everyone, from those just starting out their career to those in the C-suite." (Melody Khodaverdian, VP partnerships, Forbes)
"Drew Dudley is one of the greatest leadership experts of our time. If you care about accomplishing your goals and unleashing your fullest potential, this book is written for you. Dudley provides true stories, genuine insights, and clear strategies that will allow you to reach new levels of success and impact. Whether you're a CEO or recent graduate, you'll uncover incredible lessons that could transform your life." (Shane Feldman, CEO, Count Me In)
"I have a problem with most leadership books. They scream from mountaintops. They quote superstars. And the authors play the role of preacher on a pedestal. But Drew Dudley is different. The pedestal has been kicked away. The superstars replaced by everyday people. And what shines through? The magical wisdom of life-changing stories on how we can be better people and live better lives. This isn't a why book. It's a how book. You already know leadership matters. Now here's how to do it." (Neil Pasricha, New York Times best-selling author of The Book of Awesome and The Happiness Equation)

Outstanding
I loved the stories detailed in this book as they helped describe and define a useful, applicable, and attainable approach to leadership.
Getting the audiobook was a perk as it was read by the author Drew Dudley and he’s also an excellent speaker. That said, I also ordered a hard copy today as it was too good to pass up.
I will be using the methods detailed in this book to help formulate my daily practices, and I’ve already bought a copy (the first of many, I’m sure) for a friend.

So glad that there is finally a book full of lollipop moments and sensible leadership training for those of us with no aspiration to be a CEO. I'm an artist, still working for someone else while I prepare for the leap to self-employment. This gives me a framework to hit my own "go button" while I make that journey.

I first found out about Drew Dudley when I was searching for a video for our company's book club. I found his TED talk by random and clicked on it because of the neat hat he was wearing. This book goes into detail about his leadership philosophy and is good for any new leader and great as a refresher/paradigm shift for experienced leaders.

One of those books that just makes you better
I highly recommend. I learned so much from this book, but appreciated most that in the end we have to do the work, get out the pen and paper, and make some commitments. Mustafa, the old guys on the train, so many parts lifted my heart! This book is for someone who wants to be better and make a positive difference - big or small. You dont have to oversee a global corporation- even if you “just” oversee your family, this is an excellent guide!
