Fantastic, beyond words!
This book, read aloud, is one of the most powerful books I have ever heard. I had read the written book previously and was impressed by it, but only listening to this audio allowed me to take in the power in the story, as it came alive. Highly recommended, and if the listener thinks this is just science fiction, no! Fiction, yes, but I could find a scriptural warrant for almost every event in it. Others have said it, but the powerful message if I were to try and summarize it is the power of prayer.....and what hit me hard is that I said I believed in God and His Son Jesus Christ, the Word of God, the Living Word, and that the Bible is Truth, but I have only begun to take it all seriously, and this book opened my eyes, and started me on a new journey.

The one that started Peretti
Before I start, this is a CHRISTIAN fiction book. Apparently some people buy Christian fiction and don't know that it is Christian fiction.
That being said. I read this book some 10 odd years ago. Although it can sometimes run toward the glorificatin of the angelic, I think that it does open one's eyes to the "spritual" battle that rages around us everyday. It and it's companion Piercing the Darkness are interesting stories that I am glad that I have read. There are a couple of Peretti book where working from this "horror" supernatural genre he gets a bit carried away. This book is the first and in my opinion one of 3 books Peretti had written that I would endorse as a good way to spend some time. The other two are "Piercing the Darkness" and "Prophet"

Good story horrible recording
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
I read this story a few years ago and loved it. I figured I'd revisit it, but the recording has a bit of echo and just sounds horrible. I'm surprised they even sell one that sounds this bad.

This present darkness here today?
Listening to the spell binding unfolding of the spiritual war going on for the town of Ashton, I cannot help but wondering if this is going on right here and now for America. Frank Peretti is at his best in this spiritual warfare saga and in my opinion he does an excellent job in describing how Satan and his demons can get a foothold in people's lives and how they can influence people's decisions by painting a completely different picture of their appearance and the subleties of their deceptions. I hope people can use this bok as a guideline to the warfare that is going on right here among us. This book and it's sequel "Piercing the darkness" are two books no Christian should be without. I rank it right with C.S.Lewis' Screwtape letters.

Eye Opening to Spiritual Warfare
I read this book about 17 or 18 years ago and was amazed at how wonderful and exciting it was. It opened my eyes to what is going on around us at all times. If you've ever experienced something in your life that seems to have happened supernaturally, this book will help you see that it probably was.
I am so thankful "This Present Darkness" is now available on Audible. And, I can hardly wait for "Piercing the Darkness" to follow.
I promise you will not be disappointed! This is one of the most exciting books I have ever read. I am a Christian and this book is a blessing to me. But, even if you aren't a Believer, this book will keep you on the edge of your seat with anticipation and excitement.

Audio was terrible
I read this book years ago and really liked the portrayal of warrior angels, but I just couldn't get past the awful audio of this recording to finish it. The narrator takes such deep gasping breaths and there is a constant metallic ring that makes it sound like someone in a Darth Vader suit recorded this in the bathroom. I thought listening to it in the car might drown that out, but it didn't. I'm glad I bought it on sale.

spiritually uplifting & challenging
Think you're so special leagues of angels & demons are fighting over you? You're right!
This spiritual warfare thriller quickly became a classic in its own right & soared to the hights in Christian fiction. Peretti is a great storyteller. He weaves suspense into a catching plot that makes you want to chase ahead a few chapters. But don't--you'll ruin the surprises.
Sondericker's narration hits the nail on the head with some characters as I had imagined them in past readings. He seems to enjoy the story & really get into it; all the more enjoyable for the listener.
Don't stop here! There's an exciting sequel to follow & a number of Peretti works to keep the pages turning...or the audio running.
