As one of the NHL's most polarizing players, Sean Avery turned the rules of professional hockey on their head. For 13 seasons, he played for some of the most storied franchises in the league, including the Detroit Red Wings, the Los Angeles Kings, and the New York Rangers, making his mark in each city as a player who was sometimes loved, sometimes despised, and always controversial. In 1958, Willie O'Ree was a lot like any other player toiling in the minors. He was good. Good enough to have been signed by the Boston Bruins. Just not quite good enough to play in the NHL. Until January 18 of that year. O'Ree was finally called up, and when he stepped out onto the ice against the Montreal Canadians, not only did he fulfill the childhood dream he shared with so many other Canadian kids, he did something that had never been done before. He broke hockey's color barrier. Just as his hero, Jackie Robinson, had done for baseball.

Publisher's Summary
Steve Dangle’s incredible odyssey, from self-starting Leafs lover to sports-media star.
How do you turn ranting about hockey into a career? Steve “Dangle” Glynn is a YouTuber, podcaster, and sports personality from Toronto who managed to turn a 16-second online rant about the Maple Leafs into a career in sports media. From video blogging in his parents’ house at 19 to yelling on televisions across Canada at 28, Dangle has been involved with some of the most important sports companies in the country.
In between tales of Steve’s adventures, both online and off, This Team Is Ruining My Life is also a kind of how-to (or how-not-to) guide: in an ever-evolving media landscape, sometimes, you have to get creative to find the job you want. This is Steve Dangle and his accidentally-on-purpose journey through sports media so far.
What the critics say
“Folks always say to me, ‘When Coach’s Corner is on, no one in our house is allowed to talk.’ I reply, ‘Neither am I.’ Now I find myself hushing my own household when Steve is on. Steve says he’s taken a page from us, but I know it’s novel. Enjoy.” (Ron MacLean, Coach’s Corner)
“A wonderful look at the rickety ladder to success in sports media and how one can invent their own way of climbing it. Revel in Steve’s journey from irritated Leafs fan yelling into a webcam to irritated Leafs fan yelling into much more expensive cameras.” (Greg Wyshynski, senior NHL writer, ESPN)
“A hilarious, inspiring account of how a kid who could barely skate managed to navigate a turbulent period in the Canadian media industry to become one of the most unique voices in our sport.” (Chris Johnston, senior hockey writer, Sportsnet)

Nothing to Really Write Home About
Steve is a likeable guy who clearly has a passion for hockey. If you are already a huge fan of his material, you may really enjoy hearing about his backstory. I anticipated hearing how his passion for the game came to be and on a deeper level what that means to him. Unfortunately, his stories (although personal) are not that insightful nor particularly interesting.
There is certainly nothing to detest here, his life is just not been that challenging and his personal motivations just not that interesting.

Expected and elaborate in a good way
If you've known dangle from the LFR videos you will probably not find too many untold mysteries or unexpected turns in this biography. What you will find is a tale of a young man's journey into the formative years of his career. Dangles voice is poignant, humorous and fun which keeps the surprisingly lengthy decade long journey enjoyable. I'm left feeling closer to him and with a new found appreciation of what Steve's gone through to be the successful young man he is today. Keep on keeping on Steve! Go leafs go!

guess what this story is? a frat boy story.
I bought this looking to enjoy a book about hockey from a good Podcaster and YouTuber I found funny and interesting. Never meet your heros applies here in the form of- never learn life details about people you like because you probably won't like them after that. This guy is a frat boy and this book, far from being about hockey, is about his drunken escapes, his friends peeing in fridges, and him proudly getting hosed hours before his own wedding. absolutely ridiculous book, FRAT should be written all over it. Funny he mentions he never got A's in school. I am not surprised. Frat boys never get good grades....because they are stupid.

Far exceeded my expectations
I originally was exposed to Steve’s videos on Sportsnet during the COVID-19 pandemic, because a friend of mine told me to check out “that screaming leafs fan on YouTube.” I found his takes entertaining, and his delivery/banter to sound genuine. It’s refreshing to see someone on a major network who not only carries lots of charisma but genuinely loves the topic which they cover. That being said, I expected this book to be more of the same antics on his YouTube channel, which I would have liked.
However, this book is much better than that. It’s a solid and personal autobiography that is surprisingly relatable given that most readers are not media personalities. The way he describes his most memorable experiences attending leafs games and the Olympics evoked the myriad of emotions that I felt attending my first hockey game and seeing my favorite team win the cup in person (Tampa 04). Furthermore, hearing some of the struggles and personal adversity he faced and some of the reality checks he ran into were also quite insightful. One could definitely relate to how he dealt with his early success, struggles with insecurity, and the very human aspects of his story.
Anyway, it was a great listen and a great story.
