Story
High-powered businesswoman Lana Rubicon has a lot to be proud of: her keen intelligence, impeccable taste, and the L.A. real estate empire she’s built. But when she finds herself trapped 300 miles north of the city, convalescing in a sleepy coastal town with her adult daughter Beth and teenage granddaughter Jack, Lana is stuck counting otters instead of square footage—and hoping that boredom won’t kill her before the cancer does. Then Jack—tiny in stature but fiercely independent—happens upon a dead body while kayaking.

Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. Story
It is 1873. Mrs. Eliza Touchet is the Scottish housekeeper—and cousin by marriage—of a once-famous novelist, now in decline, William Ainsworth, with whom she has lived for thirty years. Mrs. Touchet is a woman of many interests: literature, justice, abolitionism, class, her cousin, his wives, this life and the next. But she is also sceptical. She suspects her cousin of having no talent; his successful friend, Mr. Charles Dickens, of being a bully and a moralist; and England of being a land of facades, in which nothing is quite what it seems.

Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Story
In this brilliant volume, nothing is quite as it seems. We meet a queen who makes a bargain she cannot keep; a secretary who watches over the life she has just left; a lost man who bets on a horse that may—or may not—have spoken to him. Everything that readers love about the novels of Kate Atkinson is here—the inventiveness, the verbal felicity, the sharp observations on human nature and the deeply satisfying emotional wallop.
Written by: Kate Atkinson
Publisher's Summary
In this beautiful and moving novel about family, love, and growing up, Ann Patchett once again proves herself one of America’s finest writers.
“Patchett leads us to a truth that feels like life rather than literature.”—The Guardian
In the spring of 2020, Lara’s three daughters return to the family's orchard in Northern Michigan. While picking cherries, they beg their mother to tell them the story of Peter Duke, a famous actor with whom she shared both a stage and a romance years before at a theater company called Tom Lake. As Lara recalls the past, her daughters examine their own lives and relationship with their mother, and are forced to reconsider the world and everything they thought they knew.
Tom Lake is a meditation on youthful love, married love, and the lives parents have led before their children were born. Both hopeful and elegiac, it explores what it means to be happy even when the world is falling apart. As in all of her novels, Ann Patchett combines compelling narrative artistry with piercing insights into family dynamics. The result is a rich and luminous story, told with profound intelligence and emotional subtlety, that demonstrates once again why she is one of the most revered and acclaimed literary talents working today.

Beautifully read, but a slow story to unravel.
Absolutely adored listening to Meryl Streep narrate with charm, wit and amusing familiarity. The story was sweet and although not complex or filled with any twists or surprises, it was entertaining. I felt like one of the daughters waiting patiently for my Mom to finish her story. It was a comfortable listen, but not life changing or provoking.

Patchett fans will love this book. What puts this over the top is Meryl Streep doing the reading. I loved this!

Amazing narration by Meryl Streep makes this book
Although I’m a big fan of Anne Patchett, I might not have made it halfway through this book without Meryl Streep’s narration which transforms the story into something to which you can’t stop listening. The story itself I found weaker and less interesting than any other of Anne Patchett’s novels although her prose is delightful. There’s something about this novel that just doesn’t work for me and makes it feel less authentic and more ‘constructed’ than earlier novels. And I much prefer her non fiction. But the narration is amazing- I finished the book in less than 48 hours!!! I couldn't stop listening even when I didn't really care about the story. Highly recommended- Listening to Meryl Streep read just about anything makes it better.

I love Ann Patchett and this did not disappoint. This story is like a lovely soft blanket, comforting and warm. A mother shares her story with her adult daughters and helps them see her as a full person at various stages of her life. Examining love and life and human frailties. A wonderful listen.

Totally engaging!
Ann Patchett expertly drew me in, releasing tidbits of the lives of the characters, and I was invested completely into the lives of the Nelson family. Of note, all of the other personalities were in supporting roles to this story that made me miss my grandmother and appreciate the beauty of a summer morning and the satisfaction that comes from hard productive work. No surprise that Meryl Streep was brilliant as the narrator. Beautiful book.

Thank God For Ann Patchett!
Just the most beautiful book ever! Read to you by Meryl Streep who sounds just like your own precious mother.

Another home run, Ann Patchett
Lovely story of young love, old love and the families that surround both. Telling children what our lives were like and what has stayed important through the years. Only Ann Patchett can tell these stories without sounding corny.
Meryl Streep is a great narrator. She brought an intimacy to the telling of all that went before.
