Story
A small Georgia town erupts in panic when a young college professor is found brutally mutilated in the local diner. But it's only when town pediatrician and coroner Sara Linton does the autopsy that the full extent of the killer's twisted work becomes clear. Sara's ex-husband, Police Chief Jeffrey Tolliver, leads the investigation - a trail of terror that grows increasingly macabre when another local woman is found crucified a few days later.

Story
True crime writer Wylie Lark doesn’t mind being snowed in at the isolated farmhouse where she’s retreated to write her new book. A cozy fire, complete silence. It would be perfect, if not for the fact that decades earlier, at this very house, two people were murdered in cold blood and a girl disappeared without a trace.

One of Slaughter's Best
Truthfully, I'm a bigger fan of Slaughter's stand-alone's than I am her series. A big reason for this is the series are older and so more obviously racist, sexist, classist, and homophobic than just liberally so, but another reason is they don't end great, they end okay, not bad, but they're captivating for the story itself and the character development, never really the "twist". However, this book is not only a great story with strong characters (although still problematic), but it has a great ending. It's one of her best, I think, and I've read at least 2/3 her stuff.

Great Re-Record, Will Steals Your Heart
Well I bit the bullet to buy this re recording as I had narrator Natalie Ross version, who was so great, she literally scared the daylights out of me, and I had stopped buying the authors work after Ms Ross recording of Broken. Both very well done as I am a fan of her work. Do not miss my fave Ms Ross narration of romance mysteries Linda Howard, After the Night and Shades of Twilight.
I love Ms Early narrations and I think I own every other genre she has recorded for Audible, do not miss romance Rachel Gibson Rescue Me, my fave. I have all of Ms Early Will Trent series recordings, which Criminal is my fave, so I thought either Ms Early spreads out the sprinkled terror Ms Slaughter writes in many but not all of her tales, See Cop Town, OR I have gotten use to the surprise gruesome terror author can write to illustrate the evil of some human degenerates! I think it is a little bit of both in my case.
This is one of best stories in the Will Trent series. It showcases Wills, Atlanta GBI agent, best characteristics. It is this story that makes you love Will and bare the evils the author can write, and the evil in this story can take your breath away. It also shows off my fave Amanda character. This book has three different stories within it going on so author can do her best character development, which is what she is noted for in her stories.
I do use the the 1.25x speed to match the mystery.
Were my comments of help?

Karin Slaughter can pull you in...and take you on an amazing, exhausting, terrifying ride! Disappointment
Take our the sex scenes and tone down the graphic images and you've got yourself a scary story for 12 yeat olds. The narration was fantastic which was the only thing that kept me listening. I believe this is my last Slaughter book, I certainly won't be spending valuable credits on her Will Trent or Grant County series......thi k she just pumps them out so fast she forgets how to make them interesting.

Master story teller
Slaughter’s Grant County series was remarkable and the Will Trent series showcases her ability to weave stories that will have you reading “just one more chapter”.
Kathleen Early is amazing. I didn’t care for Triptych (1st in series) but looking back, I think it was more the narrator than it was the book. I think I’ll eventually go back and read it on Kindle since I really didn’t get engaged with the Audible version that wasn’t by Early.
This book further developed and defined Will Trent’s character and the angst filled relationships he has with Amanda, Faith and Angie. Loved the inclusion of Sarah Linton.
SPOILER ALERT: read the Grant County series first or you’ll miss the backstories they make this such a great series.
