Publisher's Summary

So you think you're a Buddhist? Think again. Tibetan Buddhist master Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse, one of the most creative and innovative lamas teaching today, throws down the gauntlet to the Buddhist world, challenging common misconceptions, stereotypes, and fantasies. With wit and irony, Khysentse urges listeners to move beyond the superficial trappings of Buddhism - beyond the romance with beads, incense, or exotic robes - straight to the heart of what the Buddha taught.

I enjoyed it

Easy if cursory overview of many concepts.

I enjoyed his tongue in cheek review of modern politics and didn't find it as childish as some of the other reviewers.

Perhaps those that did still hope that "yes we can" even if we haven't managed to yet.

Truth

Very straightforward, but can only be fully understood when the reader is ready to hear it!

Interesting

The narrator seemed really snide, which was surprising when listening to a book on Buddhism - a system of thought known for cultivating compassion. There were also moments where I was reminded of a grouchy old man ranting about the state of the world, occasionally in politically incorrect ways. That all being said, this book also illuminated a key feature of Buddhist thought in a new and very rich way for me. I'm torn between throwing it away and listening to it again.

Mixed

Some of the material was interesting but I turned off once the author started giving political commentary. Try to stay in your area of expertise, because that part was embarrassingly naive.

The silliest book I have ever wasted time on.

This book is a complete waste of time.
Essentially the musings of someone who thinks he understands everything. The worst kind of mumbo jumbo masquerading as deep insight.

See the Dumbo section in chapter 2 .
Mumbo Jumbo Dumbo !
