Publisher's Summary

From the creator of the wildly popular blog Wait but Why, a fun and fascinating deep dive into what the hell is going on in our strange, unprecedented modern times.

Between 2013 and 2016, Tim Urban became one of the world’s most popular bloggers, writing dozens of viral long-form articles about everything from AI to colonizing Mars to procrastination. Then, he turned his attention to a new topic: the society around him. Why was everything such a mess? Why was everyone acting like such a baby? When did things get so tribal? Why do humans do this stuff?

This massive topic sent Tim tumbling down his deepest rabbit hole yet, through mountains of history, evolutionary psychology, political theory, neuroscience, and modern-day political movements, as he tried to figure out the answer to a simple question: What’s our problem?

Six years later, he emerged from the hole with this book. Narrated by the author, What’s Our Problem? is a deep and expansive analysis of our modern times, in the classic style of Wait but Why, packed with original concepts and sticky metaphors. The book provides an entirely new framework and language for thinking and talking about today’s complex world. Instead of focusing on the usual left-center-right horizontal political axis, which is all about what we think, the book introduces a vertical axis that explores how we think, as individuals and as groups. Listeners will find themselves on a delightful and fascinating journey that will ultimately change the way they see the world around them.

Anyway, he wanted to say a lot more about all of this, but there was a word limit on this book description, so just go listen to the book.

Advocates for nuance in a complex world

Tim Urban is a liberal who recognizes that people have different opinions on matters of society, economics, religion etc. He advocates for what he calls an ‘idea lab’ environment that has a place for thinkers on the Right, Center and Left. Having the ability to dissent and disagree openly is what can drive progress in a society. It also serves to keep extreme elements in check.

Not surprisingly, Urban covers examples of how many on the Right (e.g. Republican party) today are driven into ‘low rung’ thinking that puts their group first and wishes to silence debate. But he also spends time showing how those on the ‘low rung’ Left are doing something similar. I would recommend this book to any liberal or progressive who wishes to hear the case for why claims from the Right about ‘cancel culture’ are not as invalid as is sometimes claimed by progressives. Tim Urban avoids the vitriol and hyperbole that frequently comes from those on the Right who cover this same topic. The many different models suggested in this book — e.g. expanding the right vs left debate to include high rung vs low rung thinking, the use of the illiberal staircase and many more — help to make for a well-reasoned and compelling argument. Tim Urban’s narration is also first rate.

A Breath of Fresh Air

Tim delivers a breath of fresh air at a time where we as a society seem to be suffocating from polarisation.

My hope is that everyone who reads or listens to this book makes a concerted effort to foster Idea Lab culture where genies can battle it out on the high rungs.

More great Wait But Why style content

Excellent. A balanced look at both sides. His descriptions of the graphics meant I didn’t have to constantly open the pdf to follow-along.

Finally a framework to facilitate discussion!

This is a must read for anyone curious about the growing divide in our society across the political spectrum. Tim Urban does a fantastic job of creating frameworks for discussion and analyzing the pitfalls to which both sides of the political spectrum have fallen victim.

This isn't a left vs right problem but a higher rung vs lower rung problem and we could all benefit from taking a step back and recognizing the humanity of everyone involved.

Highly recommend this book regardless of what side of the political spectrum you sit on and if you can keep an open mind (or stay in a higher rung form of thought), I think we could all benefit.

A Powerful Framework for How to Engage With Each Other

I have always found Tim to be one of the most insightful writers of our time; he has such a specific, powerful gift of being able to explain his ideas with a unique combination of piercing clarity, and complete, context-rich coherence of the subject he’s talking about. This book is a deeply courageous, accurate assessment of what has happened in American society as it’s transitioned into the 21st century, and is a must-read for anyone, especially those who want to understand how to navigate the treacherous sociopolitical territory we Americans have found ourselves in. Even if you aren’t American, this book provides a framework for understanding your own mind that I believe is unparalleled in its simplicity and accuracy. Tim is brilliant. 5/5

First!

This is great! I really love the representative descriptions of larger concepts so they can creatively interact. It’s an honor to be the first Audible review for what I’m sure will be recognized as an intellectually stimulating work. Cheers Tim, love thinking with ya

Needs Fact Checking

Obviously an imagined reality like his “Wait But Why” website (which is entertaining).
Could not get through the bias, this is not 100% Historical.

A timely book worth reading even for someone who wants to avoid politics

I was honestly apprehensive when I heard of the topic Tim was writing about for his first book. I stay away from politics since it feels toxic and difficult to have intelligent conversations about it. I’m also not American so I thought this would be irrelevant for me.

I’m glad to be proven wrong. With his clear writing, funny illustrations, and vivid analogies, I was able to learn so much about topics I’ve often heard about but never fully understood. Tim improves upon what he has already written on his blog.

More of a Who’s the Problem Book

Was expecting to learn how the framework would address problems — climate change, war, economic inequality, global pandemics, healthcare shortages and costs failing people with physical and mental health concerns, ETC.

Instead, the author devoted much of the book to examining the many ways that SJFs are the problem. As I doubt that people who see themselves as advocates for social justice would appreciate being called “fundamentalists,” the extensive repetition of the term/initialism struck me as a kind of low rung, ad hominem moniker.

I was initially excited to listen to book and enjoyed the chapters detailing the framework. I also appreciated the effort to make the visuals available. I thought the narration was well done.

Groundbreaking, englightening

Just the thing we need today. It’s a scare resource - Intellectual discourse. Tim Urban paints a rather grim picture of last 10 years of regression. I firmly believed before reading this book that we have been regressing for a 100 years now, and this book confirms it. We are truly regressing and it’s time to reach for excellence and intellectualism.

Essential reading and a definitely seminal piece

The extra drawings are great, but this book is so well done that you don't even need them.

Complex ideas are discussed and explained so well that it feels like art. You can feel how much time was spent crafting each section and chapter, getting things right, and properly acknowledging many different points of view.

Tim Urban represents an author in complete control of his craft.

Hope for the future

Loved this book. Tim clearly laid out how society got into the mess that it is today and offers some hope for change. I sincerely hope this book is very widely read and carefully considered. The more people that can improve their understanding of how we got here the more likely we will be able to get through this together.

Must read

One of the first digestible books on politics I’ve read. Flew through it and learned a ton about US politics. I have more hope for the future of our country and new language and concepts to talk about some complex topics.
