Publisher's Summary

All she wanted was the truth, but she'll wish she never found out.

When Catherine wakes up alone one morning, she thinks her husband has gone for a run before work. But Simon never makes it to the office. His running shoes are by the front door. Nothing is missing - except him.

Catherine knows Simon must be in trouble. He wouldn't just leave her. He wouldn't leave the children.

But Simon knows the truth - about why he left and what he's done. He knows things about his marriage that it would kill Catherine to find out. The memories she holds onto are lies.

While Catherine faces a dark new reality at home, Simon's halfway around the world, alive and thriving. He's doing whatever it takes to stay one step ahead of the truth.

But he can't hide forever, and when he reappears twenty-five years later, Catherine will finally learn who he is.

And wish she'd stayed in the dark.

Disappointing

I'm a big fan of John Marrs' fiction because, for the most part, it ticks all the boxes. This work fell too far short of the standards I expect from his novels. I disliked the male narrator intensely, not just his character but his voice. All I can say is that If only he hadn't chickened out of his suicide plans earlier in his life, all those people he chose to cause harm would've been spared, and he'd have gone peacefully to the afterlife where he could do no more harm. But no, he had to live those extra 25 years killing others before he killed himself. What a disappointment this book is. But it will not deter me from reading more of Marrs' work because in general, it's genius.

I persevered purely out of a need to know if I had predicted the plot correctly… I did.

This was such a waste of my time in the end. It wasn’t really a suspenseful novel… not a thriller?? Not sure what this really was?! I left feeling like this was all way too far fetched and too much even for a work of fiction. Lots of triggers in this work for anyone who has had challenges in life. In the end I’m not sure why I stuck it out? It certainly wasn’t an escape type of read. 👎🏻👎🏻 I really enjoyed other books by this author; however, definitely not this work.

Predictable ending!

No twist suspense or anything- exactly what I thought was going to happen did happen. Super long and very disappointing!
