  • Knossos
    Aug 24 2025

You probably know the Ancient Greek myth of Theseus and the Minotaur, who lives in a labyrinth under Knossos on the island of Crete - was there ever really a labyrinth, or a King Minos? Dan is joined by the University of Oxford's Steve Kershaw to unravel the mysteries of Knossos, trace the rise of the Minoan civilisation during the Bronze Age, its collapse and the controversial excavation and reconstruction by the eccentric archaeologist Arthur Evans in the early 20th century.

This is part of our 'Dan Snow's Guide to Europe' summer travel series.

Produced by Mariana Des Forges and edited by Dougal Patmore

  • Emperor Nero
    Aug 21 2025

Emperor Nero has gone down in history as the archetypal bad ruler - cruel, decadent, and perhaps even responsible for setting Rome ablaze. But how much of this is fact, and how much is propaganda?

Dr Shushma Malik from the University of Cambridge joins us to dive into Nero’s reign, from his early promise to his scandals, the Great Fire, and his bloody downfall.

I've never listened to Betwixt the Sheets before, so this was a fine introduction. Georgina Landemare could have slipped between the cracks of history; just another woman slaving away in a kitchen, but BtS restores this ambitious, talented young professional to the pages of history. Georgina had a long, interesting life in the shadow of the Churchills, but her humour and ingenuity shines through.

Fascinating glimpse of life in the kitchen
