  • Trust and Leadership, Episode 3
    Mar 20 2023

"As we move into an even more transparent interdependent global reality, trust is more career critical than it has ever been." -- Stephen M. R. Covey, The Speed of Trust, Forward xxv.

Inspired by book The Speed of Trust, by Stephen M. R. Covey, we're talking about trust. Trust is the key leadership competency of the new global economy.

Today, we look briefly at Covey's 5 Waves (or areas) of Trust and then discuss rebuilding trust. The Christian church--local congregations as well as the universal church--needs to rebuild trust in our world. Financial and sexual scandals, manipulative and narcissistic leaders, and spiritual abuse have plagued Christianity in recent years. We have a responsibility to repair what has been broken (Romans 12:18--the conflict that comes from lack of trust creates the opposite of peace).

My mind traveled to the story of Jacob and Esau. The story of their broken relationship is told in Genesis 27, and the story of reconciliation (rebuilding trust) comes in Genesis 32. Jacob did three things:
    1) He accepted responsibility and initiated the repair of the relationship. (humility)
    2) He did not assume that words were enough. (competency)
    3) He knew completely healing the wound would take time. (consistency)

A wound that is not completely healed is easily reopened.

    Notes:
    Intro is 30 second long.
    A prayer comes at 17:43.
My thoughts and prayers are not scripted or edited.

  • Trust and Leadership, Episode 2
    Mar 13 2023

"Trust is the key leadership competency for the new global economy." -- Stephen M. R. Covey, The Speed of Trust, page 2.

Inspired by book The Speed of Trust, by Stephen M. R. Covey, we're talking about trust. An absence of trust can cripple an organization, and the Christian church has certainly experienced eroding trust. Financial and sexual scandals have plagued Christianity in recent years. Spiritual manipulation and clergy abuses have left many skeptical, distrustful, or outright hostile to the Christian faith. We can change that!

In this episode, we look at the need for both character and competence. Good intentions alone are not enough; we also need skills. When we realize that our leadership skills are insufficient for the environment in which we find ourselves, we must find ways to grow our leadership skills. When we realize that trust is not where we need it to be, it is incumbent upon us to learn how to improve it. I am not an expert on building (or rebuilding) trust; I am on this journey and learning as well.

Three Scriptures for this discussion: Proverbs 10:9, Titus 2:7, and Proverb 28:6.

    Intro is 30 second long.
    A prayer comes at 15:28.
My thoughts and prayers are not scripted or edited.

  • Let's Talk About Trust, Trust and Leadership, Episode 1
    Mar 7 2023

Inspired by book The Speed of Trust, by Stephen M. R. Covey, let's talk about trust. An absence of trust can cripple an organization, and the Christian church has certainly experienced eroding trust. Financial and sexual scandals have plagued Christianity in recent years. Spiritual manipulation and clergy abuses have left many skeptical, distrustful, or outright hostile to the Christian faith.

Where do we begin to rebuild trust? I looked to Gideon, whose story appears in Judges 6-8. God chooses to rebuild Gideon's trust in God's goodness. Perhaps, following the example of God, we should be willing to go the extra mile to rebuild trust.

A prayer for repentance and commitment to rebuilding trust comes around the 12:00 minute mark.

My thoughts and prayer are unscripted and unedited.
