In this series we look at short stories from many of our most accomplished writers. Miniature masterpieces with a lot to say. This volume is dedicated to one such recognised master of the short story, namely Katherine Mansfield, whose innovative stream of consciousness and symbolic narrative style profoundly influenced Virginia Woolf. She was born on 14th October 1888 into a prominent family in Wellington, New Zealand, the middle child of five. A gifted cellist who at one point considered taking it up professionally, her first attempts at writing were published in school magazines.

The Garden Party and Other Stories was published in 1922. A collection of fifteen short stories, it explores themes including life and death, gender and family roles, relationships and duty.

Il titolo di questo libro è il titolo di una poesia di Coleridge che è il tema del più lungo dei racconti, pubblicati postumi, scritti dal 1908 al 1921, a solo due anni dalla morte prematura della scrittrice, di cui Virginia Woolf ha detto: "E' l'unica scrittura che io abbia mai invidiato". Il filo conduttore dei racconti, e forse della vita, dell'autrice, è il passaggio continuo dalla vita al sogno, o meglio da un mondo ad un altro, legati da fili sottilissimi, sempre sul punto di rompersi.

En una cuidada reedición con la que la casa de publicaciones ha querido estrenar su sello Bovarismos, dedicado a la literatura femenina clásica y contemporánea, se encuentra desde el conocido cuento "La fiesta en el jardín", hasta el que lleva el título del libro, "El desconocido", uno de los relatos menos compilados en la obra narrativa de Mansfield, pero tan encantador como todos los de esta genial autora, inconmovible al paso de los tiempos.

Loss in any form seems to burden us with more weight than anything that can possibly be gained or learnt from. The loss of a person, a loved one, is often overwhelming. Lives so interwoven that the severing or loss of one life leaves the other weakened, unable to function for some time. Katherine was born on the 14th October 1888 into a prominent family in Wellington, New Zealand, the middle child of five. At 19 Katherine left for England, where she met and befriended the modernist writers D.H. Lawrence and Virginia Woolf, amongst others. She then travelled to Europe before returning to New Zealand. There she began to write the short stories that she would later become so famous for. But there was another less-heralded side to Katherine’s writings; that of poetry. Her verse certainly reflects much of the themes of her life and interests.
