The works of Thomas Wolfe cemented his legacy as one of the very best of the American Southern writers. Wolfe's largely autobiographical novel features Eugene Gant, who pines for a more expansive life after being born to a father whose bouts of maniacal raving are fueled by a prodigious appetite for drink.

Eugene begins his education at UNC as an alienated and out-of-place youth but becomes active in extracurricular activities like the debate club, philosophy association, campus magazine, and literary journal. Being extremely sensitive, the death of a roommate and of his brother severely affects him, as does a disappointment in love. After completing his studies and despite his mother’s pleading, he leaves North Carolina. 

George Webber, a first-time author, writes a book that makes frequent references to his home town of Libya Hill. The book is a success, except in Libya Hill, where the residents believe that it paints an extremely distorted portrait of their town. They send Webber menacing letters, including death threats.
