The devil has taken Ciera's sister. To save her, she has to travel through all nine circles of his domain, filled with demons, monsters, and sinners. Luckily, she's not alone. Accompanied by a fallen angel, a werewolf, and a hellhound, she ventures further into the lands of the dead than any human ever before. But there's a reason the living are not supposed to be in Hell, and with every circle, there are more enemies to overcome.

The story proper begins with Avis Everhard, a daughter of a renowned physicist, John Cunningham, and future wife of socialist Ernest Everhard. At first, Avis Everhard does not agree with Ernest's assertion that the whole contemporary social system is based on exploitation of labour. She proceeds to investigate the conditions the workers live in and those terrible conditions make her change her mind and accept Ernest's worldview. Similarly, Bishop Morehouse does not initially believe in the horrors described by Ernest but then becomes convinced of their truth and is confined to a madhouse.

But it isn't just demons and trials they have to worry about, the devil has set his eye on Ciera and is doing everything possible to stop her succeeding. She's determined not to let him, and with her men by her side, and her new talents emerging, there's nothing Ciera can't do. But there's always a price to pay in hell....
