About The Mother of All Field Trips: After her two sons came along, journalist Jeannie Ralston packed away her passport and her traveling bug. But when the boys turned nine and 11, she and her husband found a way to fold them into adventures—by turning the world into their classroom. Over three years the family learned together and played together in 14 countries, from the Ecuadorian rainforest to the plains of the Serengeti and the foothills of the Himalayas. They explored icons such as Machu Picchu, the Great Pyramids, the Great Wall of China, and found themselves in the middle of the Arab Spring and on one of the world’s deadliest roads. With humor and honesty, Jeannie recounts the adventures of a lifetime—made all the more harrowing and fulfilling with her sons along—and her struggles to balance motherhood with her own dreams and desires. Jeannie Ralston's work has been published in a wide array of publications, including Life, Time, National Geographic, The New York Times, Smithsonian, Audubon, Texas Monthly, Glamour, Prevention, Conde Nast Traveler, Travel & Leisure, Real Simple and This Old House. She was a contributing editor for Allure for eight years, for Ladies Home Journal for three years and at Parenting magazine for eight years. Her articles have ranged from a cover story for Life on abortion protests to a piece about hiking the Great Wall of China for the front page of the New York Times' Sunday Travel Section; from Malcolm Forbes 70th Birthday Party in Morocco for Us Magazine to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba for National Geographic. While living in Blanco, Texas, she and her husband--Nattional Geographic photographer, Robb Kendrick--started the first commercial lavender farm in Texas. Her years running that business turned into a memoir called The Unlikely Lavender Queen, published by Broadway Books. After selling the lavender farm, she moved to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico with her husband and two sons. Then the family embarked on a three-year adventure in traveling and homeschooling, which is the subject of her new e-book, The Mother of All Field Trips. She now lives in Austin, where she still writes for various publications but also teaches creative writing and novel writing at AESA Prep Academy in Dripping Springs. In any spare time, she is working on a novel.
