Description

In this vital and incisive work, best-selling and award-winning author Tanya Talaga explores the alarming rise of youth suicide in Indigenous communities in Canada and beyond. From Northern Ontario to Nunavut, Norway, Brazil, Australia, and the United States, the Indigenous experience in colonized nations is startlingly similar and deeply disturbing. It is an experience marked by the violent separation of Peoples from the land, the separation of families, and the separation of individuals from traditional ways of life - all of which has culminated in a spiritual separation that has had an enduring impact on generations of Indigenous children. As a result of this colonial legacy, too many communities today lack access to the basic determinants of health - income, employment, education, a safe environment, health services - leading to a mental health and youth suicide crisis on a global scale. But, Talaga reminds us, First Peoples also share a history of resistance, resilience, and civil rights activism, from the Occupation of Alcatraz led by the Indians of All Tribes, to the Northern Ontario Stirland Lake Quiet Riot, to the Standing Rock protests against the Dakota Access Pipeline, which united Indigenous Nations from across Turtle Island in solidarity.

Based on her Atkinson Fellowship in Public Policy series, All Our Relations is a powerful call for action, justice, and a better, more equitable world for all Indigenous Peoples.

I wish…

I wish that It did not take 60 yrs for me to understand the deplorable way that Canada treated the indigenous people in our communities. I am wholeheartedly sorry for anything I may have done or even not done to perpetuate the horrible treatment of any indigenous man, woman and child. I want to be an Allie and will conduct myself in that manner from NOW on.

Everyone needs this

This book sheds light on many historical events that happened to indigenous people around the world, some that haven't been widespread in the media. It concentrates on keeping indigenous youth alive and the reason why suicides are so high today in their communities.

I was absolutely shocked to hear some of the things I didn't know before and I'm grateful to Tanya for writing this book and all the others who shared their experiences. Thank you 🙏

hard pill to swallow

I'll say, not like it matters, but I'm a conservative person. as a Canadian i am very slightly aware of what's happened. To hear a lot of it in a book is tough and feeling very slight segregation during this pandemic nothing like this book. i have more sympathy for anyone being singled out and abused. i have definitely changed my attitude overall because of this book and i thank Tanya for it. the performance was a bit monotone but i thought of it as more somber because that's what the book called for. she did an excellent job and I'm glad she read it.

A great insight into issues in Canada and the world about aboriginal peoples and their plight. Surprising references to Apartheid in SA and Canadian Indian treatment!

Truth

A difficult listen, but an important one. This should be required reading for all Canadians.

Beyond Canada - Refers Solutions

This is a great read that doesn't only focus on Canadian Indigenous struggles. The author shares how other countries share similar issues, while giving some indication on how to solve them.

She also quotes other authors, leader, activists, and other professionals that have given her material, or support through writing this book.

High on idealism, Low on reality

The author just kept retreading the same tired talking points while making grand demands and proposing vague half-baked solutions.
