Description

Unlikely allies uniting across the world. Blood feuds that span centuries. A single chance at life.

The world watches the sky with trepidation. The insanity of Xenocide knew no bounds, and all will soon suffer the effects he had planned for a millennium. Though none know what is to come, they all know it isn't going to be easy to survive.

The Master has a plan, one that can give the world at large a way to escape the onrushing desolation. It may be on the bleeding edge of morality and what he needs might prove too difficult to secure, but the Master asks for trust.

Cal and Dale both have their role to play as the world hurtles toward destruction. One needs to bring the races of the world together while the other simply needs to survive. Surrounded by supposed allies, the duo will do all that they can to succeed - but with every new arrival comes rising tensions and faltering trust.

The apocalypse is coming. Will honor or greed stand the test of time?

Get the old guy

This is one of my favorite series and I've been absolutely loving it and then you get this guy to narrate. What were you thinking, he's horrible. The story was completely ruined for me by his narration.

I can't finish it! New narrator killed it for me

Really enjoyed this series but the new narrator completely changed people's personalities. I'm sure he's a good narrator when you start a series with him, but the change is so stark I had to stop listening because these aren't the people I came to know over the last 5 books. Unfortunately I'm returning the book and giving up on the series... For now. If come back if they bring the arouginal narrator back.

Good book but ruined by narrator

I loved the previous narrator for the other books in the series, the new narrator has completely changed the accents and characterization that the previous narrator had developed over the course of the series, so hearing people sound completely different threw me off and pulled me out of the book constantly. The story itself was good but I just couldn't enjoy it properly.

I miss Vikas

Luke Daniels does a good job, but misses the mark on a few characters. I miss Hans' and Dani's old voices, but I like Tom's new one. Not sure why they decided to change voice actors so deep into the story.

Good, but has issues

I like Luke Daniels as a narrator, so the change wasn’t that big of an issue, but there are some editing issues such as lines repeating that took me out of this book and lowered the overall score of this one compared to the others

Amazing book poor narrator

Luke Daniels can not do very good female voices especially in comparison to this series previous narrator.

oh gods why

changing the narrator is fine, except when that narrator doesn't even make a token effort of emulating main characters we've heard since book 1. I can't get past the first chapter. I legitimately love this series, and I'm normally good with change, but this is just awful 🙁

A bit different with Luke Daniels, but still good!

At first it was strange getting used to the new character voices, but I quickly got used to it and was pulled in. Love Luke Daniels narration, and this was a great book in the series.

A sorry performance

good story, even though it's less entertaining than the previous one's. The big issue is the different narrator. He change the personality of the characters by intonation and speed of speech. Furthermore, he doesn't have a good difference between female and male voice, making it confusing at time.

Change of narrator is very disturbing

Changing from Vikas Adams to Luke Daniels is very jarring. Characters who once sounded convincingly female now sound like whiskey-drinking obese grandfathers. Rose became a 50 year old Scottish man who loves smokey single malts, at least from the voice. Dani is an old sailor recovering from a bout of tuberculosis. Cal is suddenly a kibbitzing Northeasterner with a heavy, if slightly hard to place, accent. That said, the story is still a lot of fun. And, after a book or so maybe I'll adapt to these new voices. I sure do miss Vikas Adams' narrations of these characters though.

Great story; but I've been spoiled by Vikas Adam

Enjoyed the book. A *little* predictable (which is why I dislike prequels so much) if you've read the previous books in the series as well as the Completionist Chronicles to this point. But it still made me laugh and smile and I still enjoyed the ride (something I can rarely say about prequels in general).

<spoiler level="minor">
Also re-started the Ritualist and loved the name of the "game" the "Certified Altruistic Lexicon" was in charge of. *That* made me laugh for a solid minute.
</spoiler>

As an Audible listener I was disappointed in the performance. I hate to be critical as I doubt I could do any better and I *know* I've been spoiled by Vikas Adam. But the reader for this one only had one true "female" voice (and it was just wrong for Rose; and wasn't even used for Dani...not that it would work for her either) and kept using the wrong voice for the wrong character (the number of times Cal's voice was used for Dani was especially frustrating as they were talking to one another).

Rant over. Just wanted to get it off my chest.

ugh, narrator

I enjoyed Luke Daniels reading Rexxus, it was different, but felt like a valid interpretation of the characters. Here, he completely ignored everything Vikas Adams did and gave all character voices new quirks. I got really tired of Cal sounding like an impression of Peter Griffin, and various other characters gaining random accents. It was difficult to get into the story because of this.

Needs old narrator.

Almost felt like a different story. Wasn't happy with so many people sounding like red necks.

Please re-record with original narrator Vikas Adam

I've listened to the entire series until this release. Not that this book is bad, or that I dislike Luke Daniels - in fact I like Luke Daniels' narrating very much - but the combination of the two threw me off. I cannot understand the decision to change the narrator in the 5th book. A narrator who has a completely different take of the now all so familiar characters manifested by Vikas' voice and interpretation. I'm having a hard time recognizing the characters and even distinguishing them. I won't listen to this book until Vikas narrates it again. Since, I am not the only one complaining about this issue, I'm hopeful that audible will hear our request. Thank you!

Great story, but.....

Ok, so the story itself is great. I understand that the author had no option about changing the narrator, but wow, it really ruined the adventure for me. I felt like I was starting a new book series. Vikas Adams did a wonderful job with the voice acting in the previous books. Luke Daniels, while a good narrator, makes me have to repeat sections of dialogue, as all of the characters (especially the female characters) have varying degrees of the same male voice, with southern and french accents. I haven't even yet finished the book, but I really hope it is the last one so that I can move on with my wounded heart.

Edit: After finishing the book, I am glad that the series is over. I've loved this series, and I really got to love the characters, but the voice change up, even with the lore as to why, just too negatively changed the beat of the story. Hans is by far one of my favorite characters, and I feel like he was completely replaced. Luke Daniels is really great in the Ascend Online series, but here, it just didn't measure up to the bar Vikas set. Thanks Dakota, I still can't wait for the next Completionist book to release next month!

Same issue every other reviewer has

Please Audible. Can you consider making it a principle to not change a narrator with a long series. It feels like the characters have gone through extreme personality changes. I didn't check before buying for a narrator assuming it is business as usual. Luke seems like he is overacting the roles maybe it is just because the other guy was more low key and calm.

Went though this experience with Got and also suffered. Like imagine you wake up one day and your two best friends switched voices

change in narrator nearly killed all characters.

It is sad to follow a book series this deep and have the narrator changed out.

It's good, but read it yourself.

Do you remember the 90's, and saturday morning cartoons, where 4kids would just take anime and plaster random dubs over a show, totally changing the tone and feel of a series just to make a profit? Well, that's what this book is like.

Luke Daniels is a narrator I've enjoyed before, but his voices just don't work for this series. The tone genuinely sounds like a saturday morning cartoon at times, with his voices sometimes being far too exaggerated, especially when compared to the voices done by Vikas Adams. Speaking of voice comparisons, Daniels' voices sound nothing like the ones performed by Adams. We're on the 5th book of a series, so such a dramatic change in how characters sound is very jarring and confusing. If he was at least trying to sound similar to Vikas' voices I could accept it, but he gives characters radically different voices, and sometimes different accents, and as a result it's hard to immerse myself in the series, since I'm constantly confused on who is talking, and constantly comparing his voices to the voices I'm expecting.

I feel bad going so hard against Daniels, but I just didn't enjoy his version of these characters at all and genuinely wish I'd just read the book myself. The story itself is great, and exactly what I expected from the series, but the narration change seriously hurts my enjoyment of this series.

All female Voices sound like grumpy old man voice

Love the series. Love previous Narrator but they switched Narrator and well.... its a good story but you have to suffer through horrible voices on some of the characters. Don't get me wrong you can still enjoy the story but many times when the narrator switches voices I have to concentrate on who is supposed to be talking because the voice just does not fit the character. If you loved the previous books you will get this one and its worth the credit. I just hope Dakota goes back to Vikas Adam as Narrator.
