Solid Shmaybe!

I love the series and was looking forward to this but the story is not as strong and title has questionable production values. Sound effects and music overwhelm dialog often. This is s little too overproduced for my taste. I can listen to it on a quality Bluetooth speaker but off a vanilla Echo Dot it’s impossible to hear the story in parts.

I love the concept of an audio play but they still need to focus on the story and dialog, cut way back on the background noise.

In a nutshell, as a fan of the series I find it hard to recommend but it’s probably still worth a go. I just hope this is NOT the direction this series is headed or at least they figure out the right balance of background noise and dialog for future titles. Hopefully they might remaster this title and realize most people aren’t listening to this in a Dolby Atmos theatre.

Maybe it’s just this particular monkey that can’t handle the magnificence of it all...

Perfect casting for Nagatha however!

Interesting addition..

A interesting addition to the series. Some very cliche moments, some funny nods to certain movies and shows. Overall good, but the audio was at times hard to hear over the music and sound effects.

Distracting

The story is good but I definitely didn't need all the background music or sound effects. All it did was take away from the story. If I wasn't such a big fan of the series I would say I'd stop buying these books. They've clearly got Alanson on a timeline to keep pumping stuff out.

more books should be performed this way, it's a lot of fun.

note: be sure to read the proceeding books first

I rather enjoyed this!<br />

I am looking forward to Craigs next book. Some of the music and sound effects were a touch annoying at first but it's an audio play not book so take it as it is or don't bother listening. Keep up the good work Craig!

Great story

Really enjoyed the Story, the only down side was it wasn’t long enough. Can’t wait for the next book.

HORRIBLE

Impossible to follow, so much background noice one can barely hear the words on top of the rushed speaking. Needs to be compliantly redone with just R.C. bray

Waste of time and money

After thoroughly enjoying the first seven books of the series Homefront was an incredible disappointment. It felt like I was listening to a kids cartoon on Saturday morning. Many of the voices were greatly exaggerated and comical to listen to. In this case comical is not a good thing. If there is a next volume please stick to RC Bray as the narrator.

Also, why only six hours in length? The other volumes in the series fall in the 15 to 17 hour range. I strongly felt that my money was not well spent given my perception of the value received. On second thought perhaps a shorter volume is good thing. I would not have been able to endure anymore than the six hours that was provided. Get back to the original format of the first seven volumes!

Hope this isn’t a going to become a regular fixture of this story.

RC did fine on his own. The actors playing adams and smythe are very annoying. So is their dialogue.

Good story but too much everything else.

I liked the idea of the story, but it got lost in all the audio effects. Sometimes it was hard to hear the narration over the noise.

I love the series and never tire of listening to them, I can't wait for the next installment.

Great effort with potential, not the best executed

There are many who are confused by this, so I feel I have to break it down, Barney style. Let's first start with the fact that this isn't an audiobook. It's a drama special. If you go into this with the understanding that this is more like a radio drama and not a book being read to you, then you would be correct. Not sure why some monkeys are having a hard time understanding that this isn't a book, but there you go.

The Good: Well, it's another ExForce story, and R.C. Bray is involved. If you've made it all the way up to this point of the series, you already know generally what to expect. If you thought this would be a great jumping on point for this series, you'd be seriously mistaken. Also, Podium is trying out something new with this audio drama. We have to given them credit for that. I think generally their work show promise, and would consider listening to their future audio dramas if it lines up with my interests.

The Bad: To be fair, some of the audio choices weren't the best. Especially at the beginning, some of the background audio was distracting music where is should (in my opinion) have been more ambiance noise. That seemed to thankfully taper down as the drama moved forward, but then pops up jarringly a few times later. Also, the over-dramatic voice work to emphasize action was ... well, over-dramatic.

The Meh: I guess I have to say this... I don't think they used all the guest actors to their full potential. I think the work that Zachary Quinto did was good. Kate Mulgrew was a daring choice for Nagatha, but with little voice change, it didn't pay off for me. It sounded too much like Captain Janeway, not like an old British woman... er, AI. The voice actor playing Smythe didn't quite do it for me. And Adams, while I think cast well, doesn't giggle as much as portrayed I think.

When I go through the series again, I'll listen to it. It wasn't offensive, but it wasn't the best. Will I go out of my way to specifically listen to this? Not likely. This was decent enough, any my six hours weren't wasted.

Great Story, Great Voice Acting, Over The Top Foley

Instead of the sound effects adding to the story they covered it and made it difficult to hear the fantastic story and voice work.

Don’t let that stop you, but be prepared for it when you start listening.

Without spoiling it, I will give you a hint. Listen to this like you would watch a Marvel movie.

Great Performance, Needs 200% more Lizard Opera

This audio drama have been a real treat. Kate Mulgrew is perfect as Nagatha and I will not hear any other voice when reading her parts.

As for the story, there was a lot of narrative wrangling to make the plot work after the events of "Renegades" and quite a lot of coincidences had to happen for the major conflict to happen.

That said, the lizard opera scene is hilarious and I would not mind having more

Great idea iffy execution

The story and most of the performances were great! At some points it was hard to hear the dialog with all the sound effects. But I did notice it was was easier to listen to with headphones vs my work truck's Bluetooth radio. Overall though it was the another classic grade A story in the series!

Sound mixing was quite poor.

I get that this is an audio drama and not an audiobook. I have spent many hours listening to old radio audio dramas and they can be wonderful.

But this? At several points, all I could hear was a cacophony. During those times I should have been hearing dialogue with backgound noise/music. What I got, upsettingly frequently, was noise with dialogue that I couldn't understand in the background somewhere. That should not happen.

I love Skippy. I genuinely enjoyed the story. Mulgrew as Nagatha really fit to me and I loved hearing her cut loose. RC Bray, as always, was fantastic. In fact, each of the actors performances was wonderful with a couple of notable exceptions.

But what can a performer do when their performance is drowned out after they gave it?

I, sadly, can only recommend this with warnings attached.

excellent story, great performance, too much SFX

loved it however like many people reported the sound effects drowned out the voices at certain times. Still would like to see another full cast production after next book.

Finding words for a title....weird yet wonderful

Ok. Never heard a audio book like this. A book that has background noise and effects.

No need to imagine how a mech suit sounds or radio chatter or ai's, everything will be provided more like a movie than a book.

Loved the book, it was a entire new way of experiencing the book.

But not sold on the story, because feels like a filler more than the next book in the series.

That being said.
Can't wait for the next book, hoping that we will get some questions answered ;)

Overproduced

I have loved all of the books in this series and RC Bray has been amazing, which allowed me to develop the characters in my head. Unfortunately, I wasn’t really impresses with the format of this selection. It seemed like a lot of the detail was lost for me with all of the production sound effects and extra voices. Hoping that they go back to just Bray for the next one.
