Description

Large chests are said to encompass all manner of hopes and dreams. Men covet them. Women envy them. But one fact holds true - everyone wants to get their hands on some big ones.

The same holds true for one intrepid adventurer - a strapping young lad by the name of Himmel. Armed with his grandfather's trusty longsword and the dream of being the strongest, he sets out on the journey of a lifetime! It is sure to be a long and dangerous road, fraught with danger! And it all starts with a simple test - reach Level Five in the dungeon called the "newbie zone" and earn the right to become a full-fledged adventurer!

However, such things get hopelessly derailed when his adolescent mind beholds an exposed chest for the first time - a fateful meeting that would inevitably lead his life in a direction he never even dreamed of!

Content warning: Gore, violence, explicit sexual scenes

weak!

Too little humour, too much of author's repressed sexuality pouring out uncontrollably. The plot is childish with no real depth. I struggled with two thirds of the book waiting for the interesting to start, but finally gave up.

A bit of a boring slog

While the concept of the book was refreshing I found the "MC" to be a bit of hypocrisy as written. They write him as he is supposed to be stupid to give "him" a character flaw, but it acts too smart to really be dumb. Overall the MC comes off as super over powered and make the book seem like there is little danger or tension as nothing is ever really a challenge for it.

decent book for d&d fans

I enjoyed listening to this book. It's not funny like other people suggested (I was expecting something like the Caverns and Creatures series). I feel like it would have benefited from less (or no) porn. It didn't really bother me but it was cringy and completely unnecessary. Otherwise the storyline was nice.
Great naration.

very funny

loved it, would recommend without hesitation.
the story is refreshing in the over-unsed theme of fantasy game (DnD genre)

Yes, yes, yes!

My favourite series on Royal Road, and now it’s on audible, yes!!!
The story of a basic monster that managed to get absurdly lucky and level up enough to think, move, and get ambitious. (A mimic wanting to go out and find treasure, and food to eat, is very ambitious for a box meant to wait around and try to eat people).
The main character, is not human, never was human, and will never be human. He’s evil, but more in a ‘why wouldn’t I kill someone and eat them?’ Kind of way than the ‘rape and torture’ kind of way. Not that he wouldn’t rape and torture if he thought it would work, but he’s more likely to just eat someone if they’re stubborn and go out and find a different way of getting what he wants instead of wasting his time, doing things that aren’t eating or getting more shiny things.
Don’t listen to this if you can’t stomach rooting for the good guys, explicit content, or any LitRPG, or if you can’t handle masochism . This has got a lot of it. And we haven’t gotten to the part where things get really explicit in this book, that’ll be the next one.
Do read this if you like dark humor, blood, prat falls, explicit content, and lots of details about spells, skills, and stats. Oh, and rooting for the underdog. Remember the main character is a box with an appetite, he does not start off with a lot of brains. Just luck and being underestimated.
The narrator is quite good, and while there are some sound effects, they aren’t too intrusive. I highly recommend this as one of the best LitRPGs around.

Don't bother

It's really awful. Sexist in places. Couldn't finish the book. Please don't waste your money.

Entertaining, if sometimes discordant

While the book has a somewhat slow start, the over all story was fairly enjoyable. I liked most of the characters and the general plot worked as a premise for this kind of story. The only issue I had was some of the word choices used in descriptions. Would ultimately recommend it!

Not what I expected

The story line is jumps around to much, making it weak. It's a gaming style narrative, for nerds. The a monster box is the main character, seriously? Twas a waste money.

Not what I was expecting. Way more entertaining.

If you ever played a game of D&D or an RPG, this is a fresh look at characters wondering around a Mediaeval world levelling up.

Fantastic, hilarious NSFW series.

Okay so first off this book/series will drive a LOT of people away once they get to some of the more inappropriate parts. So to save you a credit, I will tell you that if you’re NOT willing to stomach xxx demon on demon scenes happening out of nowhere the maybe you should move on. If you’re NOT willing to overlook every single female mentioned being described by their ample features, I suggest you think about another series. If you’re UNWILLING to humour the idea of a cross-species harem surrounding a genderless main character then I implore you to move on before you find yourself affronted with these lewd and raunchy parts and end up leaving a poor review of this splendidly ridiculous story.
IF you DO want to read a story where the main character is a monster, then go ahead. If you ARE searching for a litrpg series where the characters are born into the world and don’t respawn, then this is for you. If you LIKE the idea of a bumbling murder hobo who is protected by how little they understand then YES, this series is for you!
I cannot wait for the next books to be released via audible and am eagerly looking for another series to read in its place until then.
*this story and series would still stand on its own without the gratuitous sex scenes, that’s how genuinely great it is. Un/fortunately however, they do end up being integral to the story. :)

Really Entertaining

This is a very different take on LitRPG! If you're expecting a traditional story about a gamer that gets sucked into a VRMMORPG and works to level up, this is not that type of book. It doesn't really have a traditional story structure or an antagonist. It's just a bawdy tale about a monster's adventures in a world that happens to operate with the same mechanics as a game.

What this book did have was humor, and plenty of it. It was a really entertaining and fun read. The characters were hilarious, and had me snort laughing out loud. The story flowed right along, the main character was unexpected, and the whole thing was well-written. Ugh, I resisted hard, but yes, I'll say it. This book was tasty.

Jeff Hays' performance was outstanding, it really suited the book. He had great comedic timing and just delivered those deadpan lines perfectly. He performed different voices for each character, including female voices, and there were some awesome sound effects. It just brought the whole thing up a notch, the book would have been a fun read, but the narration made it a hilarious listen.

Although I loved most of it, I wouldn't recommend reading this book if you're easily offended. It spends a lot of time satirizing women (God I hope it's satire). I requested a copy of the audiobook, and I'm voluntarily leaving a review.

Fun and Lighthearted Read

Morningwood takes you on a lighthearted adventure, with a very deliberate attempt to not take itself too serious. It also has a very fresh take with the protagonist, probably unlike what you have seen before. I also wouldn't be scared away by the references of sexual content. There is a lot of suggestive wording, but the actual sexual content is only occasional and over very quickly.

Jeff Hayes narrates this and continues to be fantastic. Everything he and Soundbooth Theater does is a cut above. Jeff is, hands down, my favorite narrator.

that was such a blast I'm so glad there's a sequel

If you could sum up Morningwood: Everybody Loves Large Chests (Vol.1) in three words, what would they be?

Funny, Engaging, Tasty

What did you like best about this story?

I thought the way the mimic was written was positively hilarious! I've never heard a story told from a mimic's stand point, but the fact it's a stupid box made for a lot of great moments.

Which scene was your favorite?

Meeting arms. Everything from talking to Karl to being given a name, it was great.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I got it over in two days. I bought it on a slow day and work, listened after I got home, and finished it the next day at work. I didn't want to put it down!

Any additional comments?

It was so funny, I was snickering all the time! The preview had me worried it might have been a story written from a DnD party's perspective, but no, it's actually written from the perspective of the mimic in the scene. I had a great time and I'm picking up the second book now.

Not what I expected, but great "RPG" fun

I don't think the Audible book description quite fits, but if you've ever played an RPG video game WoW or D&D this story is a great twist on some classic tropes of the genre. No, this is not some high level thought provoking fiction. It's a fun witty and entertaining story masterfully performed. I agree with some reviewers that the material is a bit juvenile, but that's what makes it so fun. Ever wonder what it would be like to live in one of the campaign worlds from any of the great RPG games? What about the lives of the monsters you always fight? Then read/listen to this book and prepare to laugh aloud while also feeling oddly connected to the most unique anti hero I've come across in some time.

tasty indeed

the cover is slightly misleading but prefect! I loved the perspective and found myself marathoning this story. I'm hopeful for an equally fun sequel. The only reason I could see for any potential dislike is the person being a prude to be honest. The crude humor is perfect and adds to the performance.

Not comedy

I was trying to find a funny book to listen to. This ended up not being super funny but definitely entertaining. A little graphic at times. Overall pretty good.

Silly but amazing performance

Not a huge fan of this story per se, I do want to know what happens next... but, I seriously HATE the RPG stats constantly interrupting the humorous and interesting antics of the Mimic. The highlight however is the AMAZING performance by Jeff Hays. If you like fantasy this is a must listen JUST for Hays.

Ok This is worth 5 stars

I hate when people give 5 stars for average stuff. Like a Fantastic Sams that gives them selves 5 stars. They are not a 5 star resort.

This book does deserve 5 stars. It’s not a below average hair cut place but instead an above average story with a fantastic performance

OMG!, D&D With SERIOUS humor. A MUST READ!

I don't know what to write so let me start with this, OMG, this was great, I want more, whatever you do don't stop writing! the humor alone was great. I'm old-school D&D so you add the two together and I know exactly where your book is coming from and I just couldn't get enough. what I want to know is what games did you base your book off of because I would play it LOL!!!

Absolutely Ridiculously Hillarious

I cannot begin to explain just how stupidly funny this book is to me. After many years of MMOs and Dungeons and Dragons, theres no end to witty jokes and pseudo puns about those experiences. Its very lewd but then again as a person of the internet i'm used to it.

Highly recommend this adventure. Its well thought out, the little extra sound effects are great and personally i think this is a hidden gem.
