Description
If there is one woman Samson Rutherford, Earl of Riverton, can’t abide, it is his meddling sister. He has spent his whole life being a pawn in her plans and tricks, but when one of her schemes leaves him embarrassed in front of an old friend, he has finally had enough. He cannot beat her at her games, or even say no to her, his only option to save his sanity and pride is to run away—and fortunately, his solicitor knows just the place….
Catherine Wallace wasn’t born to be a governess, but with her family’s fall from grace, she has become one. A good one. However, when the chance arises to stay at her uncle’s home so she can care for his horticulture project while he is absent, she jumps at the chance. Leaving her position, she plans to gather her sisters together so they can be a family again—even if it is only for a little while.
But the last thing Catherine expected to find upon her arrival was her childhood friend. Samson has sequestered himself at the cottage and claims to have been invited to watch over her uncle’s business while he is away. However, Catherine insists that’s what she’s been asked to do. The quiet retreat is what they both need, but they cannot stay there together....
Not unless they can manage the horticulture project together and somehow keep their living conditions secret, that is. Because the last thing Catherine wants is for Samson to be forced into marriage like he has been forced into everything else since childhood.
Luckily for Samson, that happens to be a risk he is willing to take.

My new favourite author!
Ahhhh…. Well Noah Wall brings Esther Hatch’s professional words to life! Her stories are so well written, none of the garbage so many self published authors put out. Well thought out, very unique plot lines…these are the basics u have come to expect from her novels, and I’ve purchased many. I’m also a professional novelist, published by legacy printing houses, not the new age of do it yourself (that I totally see the charm of) but that is to say MY editors have put me thru he!! and whichever way Esther is published, she’s a pro.
This plot was unique in many ways but also easy to guess in others, so I’d say it’s her least unique of all her novels I’ve bought, but it was still so delightful with a very fulfilling ending.
And I LOVE that it’s clean romance, but she’s willing to allow room for playfulness within the romance in a proper setting that isn’t in any way explicit, and that she’s not preventing a couple forced into marriage not to kiss until the last 5 minutes of the book. That’s so annoying.
Not enough good things to say about this book or the writer and her ever talented reader.
Irony, Ms Hatch, I’ve read a proper scoundrel and a proper charade but the other proper book I can’t bring myself to buy. The reader, not Noah Wall, is SO annoying and she sounds (in the sample) like she’s getting out of breath as she tries to raise her voice for certain dramatic expression. She also reads in an American accent, which is a personal turn off for me. Give me British, French, Scottish, Irish, Aussie or even an American southern drawl… but I’m not into American historicals. They’re either about a war, a western, settlers or a combination of those. So begging you to keep using good readers!
I actually have looked up Noah Wall and buy books she reads because I enjoy her style. It’s calm but funny where it needs to be, and i don’t think I’ve ever heard her shouting, which I am very sensitive about.
Keep up the fabulous work!
