Histoire
In Your Brain at Work, Dr. David Rock goes inside Emily and Paul's brains to see how they function as each attempts to sort, prioritize, organize, and act on the vast quantities of information they receive in one typical day. Dr. Rock is an expert on how the brain functions in a work setting. By analyzing what is going on in their heads, he offers solutions Emily and Paul (and all of us) can use to survive and thrive in today's hyperbusy work environment - and still feel energized and accomplished at the end of the day.

For years Ryder Carroll tried countless organizing systems, online and off, but none of them fit the way his mind worked. Out of sheer necessity, he developed a method called the Bullet Journal that helped him become consistently focused and effective. Then it went viral. To his astonishment, Bullet Journaling is now a global movement. The Bullet Journal Method is about much more than organizing your notes and to-do lists. It's about what Carroll calls "intentional living": weeding out distractions and focusing your time and energy in pursuit of what's truly meaningful.

Innovation is the main event of the modern age, the reason we experience both dramatic improvements in our living standards and unsettling changes in our society. Forget short-term symptoms like Donald Trump and Brexit, it is innovation itself that explains them and that will itself shape the 21st century for good and ill. Yet innovation remains a mysterious process, poorly understood by policy makers and businessmen, hard to summon into existence to order, yet inevitable and inexorable when it does happen.

In an increasingly polarized world, our only chance for coming together and moving forward is to learn from those who have mastered the art and science of disagreement. In this much-needed book, Ian Leslie explores what happens to us when we argue, why disagreement makes us stressed, and why we get angry. By drawing together the lessons he learns from different experts, he proposes a series of clear principles that we can all use to make our most difficult dialogues more productive—and our increasingly acrimonious world a better place.

Description
A New York Times Editors' Choice
A Washington Post Best Nonfiction Book of 2021
A New York Times Notable Book
A bold new book reveals how we can tap the intelligence that exists beyond our brains—in our bodies, our surroundings, and our relationships
Use your head.
That’s what we tell ourselves when facing a tricky problem or a difficult project. But a growing body of research indicates that we’ve got it exactly backwards. What we need to do, says acclaimed science writer Annie Murphy Paul, is think outside the brain. A host of “extra-neural” resources—the feelings and movements of our bodies, the physical spaces in which we learn and work, and the minds of those around us— can help us focus more intently, comprehend more deeply, and create more imaginatively.
The Extended Mind outlines the research behind this exciting new vision of human ability, exploring the findings of neuroscientists, cognitive scientists, psychologists, and examining the practices of educators, managers, and leaders who are already reaping the benefits of thinking outside the brain. She excavates the untold history of how artists, scientists, and authors—from Jackson Pollock to Jonas Salk to Robert Caro—have used mental extensions to solve problems, make discoveries, and create new works. In the tradition of Howard Gardner’s Frames of Mind or Daniel Goleman’s Emotional Intelligence, The Extended Mind offers a dramatic new view of how our minds work, full of practical advice on how we can all think better.

Must Read for Artists, Designers, Strategists
Not exactly what I was expecting, much more compelling. Some theories I have heard before but woven together they become much more salient. Design can be a difficult topic to write or read about. As an interior designer/workplace strategist I found this book so grounding and inspiring.

Made big promises that it couldn't deliver
I actually got a lot out of ~ the first half. The author put into words a lot of things I already knew intuitively regarding mapping information onto the body and using unconscious processes to process complex information. As it went on, however, I realized that there probably wasn't going to be much practical advice. If you want to apply any of the concepts mentioned, you'll have to develop your own strategies and techniques based on the information given.
The book ends with two consecutive chapters about utilizing group think and, I kid you not, "Hive mode," because it's supposedly more effective. The author belabors the point so extensively that I began wondering if it was intentionally added to produce a knee-jerk reaction against the mindless collectivism espoused. Labeling independent thinking "group hate" does not help her case.
The reason that people commonly hate groupwork is not because of cultural pressure to pursue independence at all costs but a real reaction to forced collaboration. It doesn't matter how effectively people work when they collaborate - if you don't agree with the goals of the collective, you don't have to participate. The reason that this is true is the same reason that slavery and rape are unethical.
Consent is suspiciously absent from the topics covered. I guess I'm the problem though, right? Me and the rest of the "group haters." I'm sure I would feel better if I just tried to relax and enjoy it. 3 stars is a gift. If the first half weren't so good, I wouldn't have rounded up. It does make the rest of it that much more disappointing though.

A Look Into the Future.
This book got me thinking of ideas that were new and unique--and I have read widely in the scientific research on learning and performance. Some of the research paradigms described are fairly new, so time will tell about their rigor, generalization, and uptake in practice. But that's okay! Thank you to Annie Murphy Paul for bringing this work to light! A very important book!
