Description

Michael Jordan credits George Mumford with transforming his on-court leadership of the Bulls, helping Jordan lead the team to six NBA championships. Mumford also helped Kobe Bryant, Andrew Bynum, and Lamar Odom and countless other NBA players turn around their games. A widely respected public speaker and coach, Mumford is sharing his own story and the strategies that have made these athletes into stars in The Mindful Athlete: The Secret to Pure Performance. His proven, gentle but groundbreaking mindfulness techniques can transform the performance of anyone with a goal, be they an Olympian, weekend warrior, executive, hacker, or artist.

Mumford's deeply moving personal story is unforgettable. A basketball player at the University of Massachusetts (where he roomed with Dr. J, Julius Erving), injuries forced Mumford out of the game he loved. The meds that relieved the pain of his injuries also numbed him to the emptiness he felt without the game and eventually led him to heroin. After years as a functioning addict, Mumford enrolled in Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn's Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction program, and made meditation, on and off the cushion, the center of his life. He kicked drugs, earned a master's degree in counseling psychology and began teaching meditation to inmates and others.

When Michael Jordan left the Chicago Bulls to play baseball in 1993, the team was in crisis. Coach Phil Jackson, a long-time mindfulness practitioner, contacted Dr. Kabat-Zinn to find someone who could teach mindfulness techniques to the struggling team - someone who would have credibility and could speak the language of his players. Kabat-Zinn led Jackson to Mumford and their partnership began. Mumford has worked with Jackson and each of the eleven teams he coached to become NBA champions. His roster of champion clients has since blossomed way beyond basketball to include corporate executives, Olympians, and athletes.

This is a book about spirituality!

Do not be mislead by the title. This book is about spirituality, and hardly touches on performance.

I found it an absolute slog and very irritating to get through because it was highly abstract, repetitive and unrelatable. It talked about “consciousness” and “flow” in more words than was necessary, using a plethora of metaphors and anecdotes but failed miserably in giving very concrete examples on how the listener is supposed to execute it.

The book can be summed in maybe 20 mins of listening time, the rest was just a repetition. Sorry to give it a bad review but it really was just....so irritatingly repetitive.

Good intro, but only an intro

Makes a good case, but is incomplete as a practical manual.
Accessible to a broad audience, and may convince some skeptical athletes of the benefits of mindful practice; however, limited benefit to those with familiarity with evidence in this field.

Can't stop listening

I had no idea how the mind plays the largest part of being successful at sports or other life experiences. I wanted to bring my game to a higher level and after two months my game has changed dramatically. I listen almost daily as I get more and more into the mindset of a high performance athlete. Use it for pregame mindset or meditating prior to sleeping or starting your day. I can't stop listening.

For the athlete to learn mindfulness....

NOT for the student of mindfulness who is looking to apply it to athletics.

That said, for its intended audience, it would probably be career transforming.

I was a student of mindfulness already, looking for more subtle and less obvious ways to be more mindful during performance and practice.

His explanations were mostly basic and obvious for an intermediate student of the mind, success psychology and eastern thought. (Which is blended in the text)

It fell short of my expectations because I had the wrong expectations. That isn't the purpose of the book.

The purpose of the book is to introduce athletes, who have essentially no knowledge of these subjects, to the basic ideas and practices that can help them.

If you are an athlete who wants a mental edge with minimal mumbo-jumbo and psycho-babble then this book IF USED REGULARLY will transform your game. (These are "practices". They don't work without practice)

If you are versed in the subjects mentioned above, this book is probably not for you.

Hope this helps.

Worth the listen

Great insight. Applies to more than just sports. Really to everyday life. I would consider listening to it a few times

Amazing

This is a must-read (or listen) for any competitive athlete. I learned how to reframe my thoughts as I approach my workouts and competitions to a more constructive and conscious experience as opposed to doubt or fear.

if you have ever heard of mindfulness. then ...

you don't need this book. After reading the raving reviews, I was pretty excited and thought finally something that will take me to the next level. Unfortunately, the main message of the whole book can be summarised as "Being mindful I
is needed to achieve greatness in sports. So watch your breath and be present!"... Thousands of videos on YouTube that will tell you more and guide you better to practices that you can follow. Don't waste your money/time with this!

Good but not as informative as I hoped.

The practical application was not explained well and left me wanting however the conceptual time was plentiful

Talks about the importance of being mindful

Moral of the book: the utility in the practice of mindfulness. Not well-organized. Overall do not think it's a worthwhile investment due to low quality/$ ratio.
