Description

War is only the beginning...

From number one New York Times best-selling author Jennifer L. Armentrout comes book four in her Blood and Ash series.

From the desperation of golden crowns...

Casteel Da’Neer knows all too well that very few are as cunning or vicious as the Blood Queen, but no one, not even him, could’ve prepared for the staggering revelations. The magnitude of what the Blood Queen has done is almost unthinkable.

And born of mortal flesh...

Nothing will stop Poppy from freeing her King and destroying everything the Blood Crown stands for. With the strength of the Primal of Life’s guards behind her, and the support of the wolven, Poppy must convince the Atlantian generals to make war her way - because there can be no retreat this time. Not if she has any hope of building a future where both kingdoms can reside in peace.

A great primal power rises...

Together, Poppy and Casteel must embrace traditions old and new to safeguard those they hold dear - to protect those who cannot defend themselves. But war is only the beginning. Ancient primal powers have already stirred, revealing the horror of what began eons ago. To end what the Blood Queen has begun, Poppy might have to become what she has been prophesied to be - what she fears the most.

As the Harbinger of Death and Destruction.

Pls read this review before spending $ or credit

I usually don't write a review unless it's a good one; however, I have to be honest, I felt really disappointed by this book. I have until this point loved the whole series starting from Book #1 From Blood and Ash.

I loved how JLA developed the love story between Poppy and Hawk/Cas and the cast of friends around them. She did an amazing job of world-building too. While each book in the series was a bit repetitive, I didn't mind that since I understand she writes for different readers (some readers don't read the books in sequence or some readers forget what they read in previous books). Even when the series became much more sexually explicit (NA) as the story progressed, I stuck with it - tbh, while I am not a prude, I found the sex scenes in the Crown of Guilded Bones really over the top and a little pornographic. I have nothing against sex scenes especially when they add and develop the romance between the H/H so I stuck with the series because I guess it made sense since technically Cas is centuries old and Poppy was the maiden and just coming into her womanhood so it's natural she would be curious and exploring. I still loved how JLA developed the story with the twists and turns.

I even purchased A Shadow in the Ember and while I did find the book mirroring Poppy and Casteel's story, it still made sense to me since it was a prelude to their story and there was a lot of "Easter eggs" for loyalists of this series.

I share all this background so that if you are reading this review, you hopefully get a sense that I am trying to be fair to the author and the series. This book, while it does develop the story and has some good twists & turns, was a major disappointment for me as a reader who has invested so much into the series. I think if JLA just concentrated on the suspense and uncovering the linkage between Gods/Primals and the war, I would have liked the story more. Instead, the author unnecessarily changed the dynamics of the main romance in the series. Many readers fell in love with the series because they fell in love with Poppy and Cas' relationship. This book irrevocably changes that relationship and I, for one, really disliked the change. There were other characters introduced with some hints of romance that could have developed further which would have been more interesting IMO.

The ending hints at major conflict brewing but honestly, with the insertion of A Shadow in the Ember in the series right before this book, it seems anticlimactic. If Poppy and Casteel's relationship dynamic didn't change in this book, I think I would read on but given that it has, even the upcoming "war" isn't enough of an enticement for me to read on and invest my time & $ in doing so (and this saying a lot given that I have read most of JLA' books). I have been waiting a year for this book to come out and it honestly, was very disappointing.

PS - I know other reviewers did not like the story because of the addition of Tim Campbell - I actually found both narrators very good. It was not their fault that the story unfortunately was not which is why I gave their performance 5 stars.

so sad to be disappointed

The first 2/3 of the book drags, has excessively repetative dialog, and almost made me not finish it. The last 1/3 was actually good, relationship become intresting, dialog gets better, but it didnt fully make up for the lack of the first parts. I am so sad to be disappointed by this book.

too much filler

I have loved all the books so far. They have a good balance between action and romance. I love the story too, which is why one thing annoys me. once poppy and cas get together, it's non-stop sex. to the point it doesn't feel like it's even adding to the romance, but that the constant sex scenes are just a filler to make the book longer than it actually is. at this point in the series, I started just fast forwarding through it. it was starting to feel thoughtless and silly. I mean, (spoiler ahead) cas was locked in a cell, tortured and starved, and had to be carried out unconsciously. and the first thing him and Poppy do is f*ck? that just feels out of place. like thoughtless lust, not love. BUT if that kind of thing doesn't bug you, then the books are great imo!

Binge worthy

Completely binge worthy as always- Armentrout always delivers!

Love the addition of a male performer-Stina is an exceptional performer for both male and female characters. I’ve loved her through the whole series. We only hear Tim when we see things from Cas’ perspective, which adds a nice flavour to the tale. A male reader was necessary for these parts to make sense. Tim did a great job picking up her characters and continuing the story. I was not surprised to hear that Stina directed- that’s an excellent choice that kept the book cohesive to the entire series. Really well done!

The change of cast

I have not even finished the audio book , considering seeing if I can get a refund and just buy the book to read. After almost a hundred listening hours in the other books they decide to change the Cass’s voice to another reader in this one. What a stupid move. I can’t get into it when it’s Cass’s part now . No emotion, older man voice . Throws you right off when you’re used to another voice.

Loved this book!

This book was really good, the series took awhile to grow on me, but I really like it now. My one beef with this audio book is how the performer says “eeeeeeeeeether”, it drove me crazy, but other than that I loved it.

Not worth buying

I purchased this book out of morbid curiosity. And especially how the previous book had ended. It painful to go through this series and its about time i need to give up on this series. This is series is not at all well written. With the conversations between main characters ending mostly with ‘shutup’. Things that should be expedited are extremely streched and repetitive, not to mention thw info dump. Author decided all that was disclosed in previous series was .. well… wrong …. So yea…. I have been very disappointed by how cass’s charachter has been written. For a “dark one” he is … just ….. weak…. His gift of compulsion is quite useless.. coz well …… not only we have not seem him use it … it does not even work on enemies.. lol …. Anyways chapter 44 skip to that its hot!! .. thats it …rest do yourself a favour and find a good reddit post read the plot and dnt buy the book.

Barely managed to finish it

Let's start with the narration. Having two narrators utterly did not work for me. Different voices for all these characters is just too confusing. And, as much as I have enjoyed the female narrator, this male one is bad. Just bad. The plot is pretty awful as well, having its moments but generally much weaker than the previous books. Doubt I'll bother with the rest.

Not the best of the series

I’m too far now to stop but this one was my least favourite of the series. I hated the male narrator and the accents he was doing were different than Poppy’s. I felt like the story was kind of long and dragging and action things were short.
