Long-listed, Audible.com Best of the Year, 2024

The long-awaited explosive climax to the first arc of the #1 New York Times bestselling Stormlight Archive—the iconic epic fantasy masterpiece that has sold more than 10 million copies, from acclaimed bestselling author Brandon Sanderson.

Dalinar Kholin challenged the evil god Odium to a contest of champions with the future of Roshar on the line. The Knights Radiant have only ten days to prepare—and the sudden ascension of the crafty and ruthless Taravangian to take Odium’s place has thrown everything into disarray.

Desperate fighting continues simultaneously worldwide—Adolin in Azir, Sigzil and Venli at the Shattered Plains, and Jasnah in Thaylenah. The former assassin, Szeth, must cleanse his homeland of Shinovar from the dark influence of the Unmade. He is accompanied by Kaladin, who faces a new battle helping Szeth fight his own demons . . . and who must do the same for the insane Herald of the Almighty, Ishar.

At the same time, Shallan, Renarin, and Rlain work to unravel the mystery behind the Unmade Ba-Ado-Mishram and her involvement in the enslavement of the singer race and in the ancient Knights Radiant killing their spren. And Dalinar and Navani seek an edge against Odium’s champion that can be found only in the Spiritual Realm, where memory and possibility combine in chaos. The fate of the entire Cosmere hangs in the balance.

Good book, Kate reading is unbearable

Good book. Only way I could listen to this is to put the Kate Reading parts up to 1.5 speed. She makes every character annoying

Amazing ending to an amazing story

Brandon concludes the first arc of his epic tale on a high. All that I love Sanderson’s writing for is present here: satisfying payoffs, difficult choices, hopeful ending. After book 4, which admittedly was more of a setup for this book, Sanderson returns to high octane action. Most of the questions that we had throughout the series are answered but, as this is only the midpoint, it leaves you with a lot more questions by the end. Sprinkle in an unexpected twist, a nail-biting cliffhanger and you get one of the best entries in the Stormlight series to date.

On a side note: yes, there are gay characters in this story. Don’t pretend like the story was not hinting at it before. Everyone complaining about the “gay propaganda” in the story, please look around yourselves. Everyone is different and likes different things or people. We should try to accept one another, instead of separating everyone into “us” and “them”, just because they look different or love differently. That’s one of the main points of this story.

Unlike a lot of the media today, character’s love interests are not there just for the sake of it, they make sense in the context of that character. Those characters are not defined by being gay, but instead it is just one aspect of them. Just like it is in real life. Let’s stop pretending like those people don’t exist, just because you don’t like them.

Bit long, but still good.

For sure a lot could have been taken out, but it was still a good book. There were a couple characters offered to the snow, but they weren't ones that would have been wrecked by the sacrifice, so at least there's that.

there were a lot of rapid fire introspective revelations, which seams a little rushed for a book that spanns 10 days. some of them make sense, but for many it seams like they just needed to have a revilation, so they did.

In depth

Fantastic story with amazing presentation. It’s definitely a long read or listen depending on how to prefer to absorb the story but it’s well worth the investment of time and energy. Sanderson again made an incredibly compelling, imaginative and interesting story with characters that develop and grow in ways everyone can relate to. The details that Sanderson went to in describing battles, their tactics, the equipment used and what the soldiers experienced while on and off the front lines is something not many other authors can manage, let alone pull off in such style. Definitely going to enjoy listening to this book a second time while I patiently wait for the next book in the series.

I was looking forward to this next book in the series, but was so disappointed to find DEI nonsense...

Terrible voice characters

The overall story is fine. I enjoyed the other Stormlight novels more. I’m thinking a lot of that had to do with Michael Kramer and Kate Reading’s performances. As I’ve listened to other novels on Audible, which have amazing performances I think the contrast has become too significant for me to enjoy them anymore. The male performance in particular is really poor. I kept thinking to myself his characters had zero depth to them and sound like what my characters would sound like if I had to narrate this book. I have zero talent, and I would just make some weird adjustments to my voice to create characters. Dalinar every single word sounds like it’s Moses holding up the 10 Commandments tablet, proclaiming them to his people in an epic moment. For contrast go listen to any of the Joe Abercrombie books. Or the Black Company books. Or the Malazan books.

It hurt so much and then it got better.

I almost quit when I realized all 3 of my favorites were probably dead before the book was done... I'm very glad I didn't.

Amazing finale to the first half of Stormlight

The whole book feels like one continuous climax compared to previous books that built up to theirs then went into the "Sanderlanche". This one spends about a chapter on letting the character breathe before events continue to constantly unfold. Well performed as well!
