  • From Military to Medicine: The APEX Skin Story & Tips That Can Save Your Life
    Apr 7 2025

Skin cancer affects one in five Americans in their lifetime, yet many dangerous misconceptions persist about who's at risk and what warning signs to watch for. In this eye-opening conversation with Dr. Jorge Garcia, founder of Apex Skin Dermatology Center, we uncover the truth about skin cancer detection, prevention, and treatment that could potentially save your life.

Dr. Garcia's remarkable journey from biomedical engineering to US Navy flight surgeon to Harvard-trained Mohs surgeon has culminated in a patient-first dermatology practice that has treated over one million patients across 15 locations. His mission? Making expert dermatology care accessible when people need it most.

We dive into the three most common types of skin cancer and the surprising places they can appear—even in areas never exposed to sun. Dr. Garcia dispels the dangerous myth that darker skin tones are immune to skin cancer, revealing how Bob Marley's fatal melanoma began as what he thought was a simple soccer injury to his toe. You'll learn the critical ABCDE warning signs of melanoma and why that persistent "pimple" might deserve professional attention.

The conversation explores what happens during an annual skin check (it's much simpler than you might expect!), treatment options from gold-standard Mohs surgery to non-surgical alternatives, and practical prevention strategies that don't require avoiding your favorite outdoor activities. Dr. Garcia also shares how Apex Skin's integrated approach—featuring in-house pathology, clinical trials for rare conditions, and comprehensive aesthetic services—is transforming dermatology care.

Whether you've been putting off that suspicious mole check or simply want to better protect your skin health, this conversation delivers essential knowledge with the perfect blend of medical expertise and approachable guidance. Visit apexskin.com to schedule your annual skin check and explore their services across Northeast Ohio.
