COVID University New York (CVNY) aims to uplift the voices of communities hit hardest by the COVID-19 pandemic and preserve the stories of these vulnerable groups in a historical record. We talk to students, staff, and faculty at the City University of New York community and dive into everything from death and essential workers to protests and theater. Black-Owned celebrates small businesses and their role in community building—and in liberation. Journalist Char Adams reports on how Black bookstores have always been centerpieces of resistance. This is a story of activism, espionage, violence, and perseverance. The first Black-owned bookstore was opened by an abolitionist in 1834. In the twentieth century, civil rights and Black Power activists started a Black bookstore boom nationwide. Malcolm X would deliver speeches at the doorstep of the National Memorial African Book Store in Harlem, a place dubbed “Speakers Corner.”
