Originally written in French, The Conquest of Bread first appeared as a series of articles in the anarchist journal Le Révolté. It was first published in Paris with a preface by Élisée Reclus, who also suggested the title. Libertarian thought receives very little criticism as to its assumptions. We all have a libertine streak within us. However, that desire for unbridled freedom is quite different than formal libertarian philosophy. Becoming a libertarian requires buying into the assumptions of that philosophy.
