You can't kill the dead! Like any good monster, the zombie has proven to be ever-evolving, monumentally mutable, and open to seemingly endless imaginative interpretations: the thralls of voodoo sorcerers, George Romero's living dead, societal symbols, dancing thrillers, viral victims, reanimated ramblers, video-gaming targets, post-apocalyptic permutations, shuffling sidekicks, literary mash-ups, the comedic, and, yes, even the romantic.

A mysterious outbreak has spread quickly, ravaging the globe. The illness is debilitating and deadly. Those who suffer from the virus succumb to a horrible death. Unfortunately, it doesn't end there. The infection transforms them into an unstoppable force of mindless killing machines. At the onset of the epidemic, Nila Carter and her family retreated to her father's cabin in search of safety and seclusion from all that transpired around them. With supplies, fresh water and fertile ground, they were joined by a handful of strangers and positioned themselves for long-term survival.

Two months ago, billions of people were killed by a deadly germ. Days later, they rose again in massive numbers. William’s day at the hospital starts out like any other - until he encounters two zombies locked in a utility room. Having seen plenty of horror movies, he instantly recognizes the danger and heads straight for his uncle’s safe house outside of town. Mille is on a summer field trip with her classmates when their bus is attacked by two flesh-eating zombies. Panic erupts, and Mille is one of the only ones to make it out alive. Meanwhile, Dan realizes his attempts to stop the virus from spreading have been futile. The infected reach his home and force him to leave his family behind.

Dave finds an unconscious Howie and carries him into the residential streets for safety. The others have been separated and are searching for each other. Nick falls asleep and misses the pick up.

We meet Lilly and Billy, a brother and sister who are led by their ineffectual father into a series of devastating situations which results in Billy being taken by two men and Lilly witnessing the murder of her father. Lilly tracks her brother and meets up with Nick who, not being able to find his group, agrees to help her.

With supplies running low and animals scarce, not even the freezing zombies can make the future look bright for Axl's group. And as the snow grows deeper, Vivian's concern for Hadley and Jon only becomes more intense. Each day seems to bring more challenges, and every week that passes with no sign of their friends makes it more difficult for the group to believe life can ever return to normal.

With their shelter destroyed and their sense of security shattered, Vivian, Axl and the group set off in search of a safe place. But the group's morale is at an all-time low, and they now know it's not just the dead they have to fear.
