Relentless phone calls interrupt the peace of a warm August morning in Three Pines. Though the tiny Québec village is impossible to find on any map, someone has managed to track down Armand Gamache, head of homicide at the Sûreté, as he sits with his wife in their back garden. Reine-Marie watches with increasing unease as her husband refuses to pick up, though he clearly knows who is on the other end. When he finally answers, his rage shatters the calm of their quiet Sunday morning.

It’s Gamache’s first day back as head of the homicide department, a job he temporarily shares with his previous second-in-command, Jean-Guy Beauvoir. Flood waters are rising across the province. In the middle of the turmoil a father approaches Gamache, pleading for help in finding his daughter. As crisis piles upon crisis, Gamache tries to hold off the encroaching chaos, and realizes the search for Vivienne Godin should be abandoned. But with a daughter of his own, he finds himself developing a profound, and perhaps unwise, empathy for her distraught father.

On their first night in Paris, the Gamaches gather as a family for a bistro dinner with Armand’s godfather, the billionaire Stephen Horowitz. But an attempt on the elderly man’s life sends Armand, his wife, Reine-Marie, and his former second-in-command at the Sûreté, Jean-Guy Beauvoir, from the top of the Tour d’Eiffel, to the bowels of the Paris Archives, from luxury hotels to odd, coded works of art. It sends them deep into the secrets Armand’s godfather has kept for decades.

Christmas is approaching, and in Québec it's a time of dazzling snowfalls, bright lights, and gatherings with friends in front of blazing hearths. But shadows are falling on the usually festive season for Chief Inspector Armand Gamache. Most of his best agents have left the Homicide Department, his old friend and lieutenant Jean-Guy Beauvoir hasn't spoken to him in months, and hostile forces are lining up against him. When Gamache receives a message from Myrna Landers that a longtime friend has failed to arrive for Christmas in the village of Three Pines, he welcomes the chance to get away.

Hardly a day goes by when nine-year-old Laurent Lepage doesn't cry wolf. When an intricate old map is found stuffed into the walls of the bistro in Three Pines, it at first seems no more than a curiosity. But the closer the villagers look, the stranger it becomes. Given to Armand Gamache as a gift the first day of his new job, the map eventually leads him to shattering secrets. To an old friend and older adversary. It leads the former Chief of Homicide for the Sûreté du Québec to places even he is afraid to go. But must. And there he finds four young cadets in the Sûreté academy, and a dead professor. And, with the body, a copy of the old, odd map.

Happily retired in the village of Three Pines, Armand Gamache, former Chief Inspector of Homicide with the Sûreté du Québec, has found a peace he'd only imagined possible. On warm summer mornings he sits on a bench holding a small book, The Balm in Gilead, in his large hands. "There is a balm in Gilead," his neighbor Clara Morrow reads from the dust jacket, "to make the wounded whole." While Gamache doesn't talk about his wounds and his balm, Clara tells him about hers. Peter, her artist husband, has failed to come home. Failed to show up as promised on the first anniversary of their separation. She wants Gamache's help to find him. Having finally found sanctuary, Gamache feels a near revulsion at the thought of leaving Three Pines. "There’s power enough in Heaven," he finishes the quote as he contemplates the quiet village, "to cure a sin-sick soul." And then he gets up. And joins her.

When a peculiar letter arrives inviting Armand Gamache to an abandoned farmhouse, the former head of the Sûreté du Québec discovers that a complete stranger has named him one of the executors of her will. Still on suspension, and frankly curious, Gamache accepts and soon learns that the other two executors are Myrna Landers, the bookseller from Three Pines, and a young builder. None of them had ever met the elderly woman. The will is so odd and includes bequests that are so wildly unlikely that Gamache and the others suspect the woman must have been delusional.

But now Lillian herself is dead. Found among the bleeding hearts and lilacs of Clara Morrow's garden in Three Pines, shattering the celebrations of Clara's solo show at the famed Musée in Montreal. Chief Inspector Gamache, the head of homicide at the Sûreté du Québec, is called to the tiny Quebec village and there he finds the art world gathered, and with it a world of shading and nuance, a world of shadow and light. Where nothing is as it seems. Behind every smile there lurks a sneer. Inside every sweet relationship there hides a broken heart.

Deux jours après, une alerte AMBER est déclenchée à l’échelle de la province de Québec: une jeune fille dévoilant ses charmes sur internet a été kidnappée. Par qui? Pourquoi?

L’inspecteur Jean-Sébastien Héroux et son équipe de la police de Trois-Rivières sont sur un pied d’alerte : un prédateur s’en prend à des jeunes femmes dans ce qui ressemble à un rituel chorégraphié et savamment planifié. Malgré les témoignages des victimes et les preuves matérielles recueillies sur les scènes de crime, les fausses pistes s’accumulent. La tension monte !

Ce matin-là, Vital Bujold a repêché le corps d’une femme qui, jadis, avait viré le cœur des hommes à l’envers. En Gaspésie, la vérité se fait rare, surtout sur les quais de pêche. Les interrogatoires dérivent en placotages, les indices se dispersent sur la grève, les faits s’estompent dans la vague, et le sergent Moralès, enquêteur dans cette affaire, aurait bien besoin d’un double scotch.

Juillet 1981. Pendant que Daniel Duval et son collègue Louis Harel participent aux Jeux mondiaux des policiers à Mexico, Gilles Hébert part en vacances avec ses petits-fils Sébastien, six ans, et Vincent, treize ans. Le vieil homme étrenne sa roulotte et il a la ferme intention de trouver un site enchanteur, en pleine nature sauvage. Si les Jeux se terminent bien pour les deux policiers, il n'en va pas de même pour le voyage des campeurs...

Ayant démissionné des crimes majeurs, Victor Lessard accepte de donner ses impressions à son ancienne partenaire, Jacinthe Taillon, sur la scène du meurtre d'un journaliste d'enquête. En parallèle, son mentor, Ted Rutherford, lui fait une révélation troublante à propos du passé de son père, Henri Lessard. Pris pour cible dans un attentat, Victor doit bientôt disparaître pour assurer sa sécurité et celle de ses proches.

Une invasion de domicile tourne au drame : tout porte à croire qu’il s’agit d’un simple cas de légitime défense. Or, en attente de procès pour harcèlement, la victime était soumise à une ordonnance de la cour lui interdisant de s’approcher de cette résidence, précisément. Pourquoi donc Yves Quessy s’y est-il rendu en pleine nuit ? Au cours de l’enquête, l’inspecteur Héroux et son équipe découvrent des faits étonnants qui soulèvent des doutes.

Juillet 1983. Sur l’autoroute 20, Benoit Ayotte et Sylvain Mailloux, deux voyous en provenance de Montréal, font du pouce vers l’est. Ayotte veut se terrer au chalet de l’oncle de Mailloux, à Rivière-à-Pierre, car, lors d’une mission pour son clan, il a abattu par erreur un innocent père de famille plutôt qu’un membre d’un gang rival. Mais dès leur arrivée dans la région de Québec, la mort s’invite dans le périple des deux malfrats.

Alors que le nordet menace, l'agente Simone Lord monte, à titre d'observatrice, sur le Jean-Mathieu, un chalutier en partance pour la chasse au phoque. Elle n'est pas la bienvenue à bord. La météo s'annonce rude. Pour Simone, mais aussi pour Joaquin Moralès, qui retire son alliance comme on arrache un arbre. Déraciné, il embarque avec Érik Lefebvre, en vue d'une semaine de ski aux abords du Saint-Laurent. Juste avant le départ, la psychologue judiciaire Nadine Lauzon arrive en courant, avec un dossier sur lequel l'enquêteur Moralès devrait se pencher.
