Of all the ghostly lore that bedevils Sleepy Hollow, none terrifies more than the galloping spectre of the Headless Horseman. Charlotte Perkins Gilman's powerful and unsettling story of a young woman descending into psychosis. Confined to her attic bedroom by her husband to ensure rest and recuperation after having her baby, and with nothing else to occupy her mind, the woman slowly becomes obsessed with the old yellow wallpaper covering the walls until she loses her grip on reality, imagining herself and others imprisoned behind the wallpaper.

After receiving a letter from his boyhood friend that he is suffering from some sort of debilitating illness, a man feels compelled to travel to a reclusive mansion to assist him. He learns that his friend and his deathly-ill sister are the last in the Usher line, slowly collapsing into madness. The Gothic mansion seems to have a bizarre metaphysical connection with the brother and sister, and there are incredibly strange occurrences that continue to happen late at night. Will this well-meaning friend survive another night in this macabre Gothic house of horror?

Il capolavoro di Stevenson analizza l'eterna lotta tra il bene ed il male con una potenza drammatica che lo ha reso un’opera di portata universale. Il tema del “doppio” emerge prepotentemente dagli esperimenti del dott. Jekyll, il quale esplorando il lato oscuro di ogni essere umano, incontra il suo spaventoso alter ego: Mr. Hyde.

Lo strano cado del Dr. Jekyll e Mr. Hyde di Robert Louis Stevenson è un romanzo psicologico imperniato sulla vicenda di un medico che scopre la doppia natura degli esseri umani e che si propone di creare un farmaco capace di separare le due anime dell’uomo, consentendo loro di vivere esistenze separate.

Pubblicato nel 1886, questo famosissimo romanzo di Stevenson è un grande classico della letteratura mistery e della fantascienza. Ciò non toglie che sia anche un grande opera letteraria che approfondisce la psicologia della scissione della personalità e il rapporto del uomo col suo lato ombra. Descrive inoltre mirabilmente lo stato di dipendenza provocato dalle droghe e l’illusione di potersene liberare facilmente si trova tutta nella frase del protagonista: “Posso liberarmi di Mr. Hyde quando voglio”.

The titular house in this short story sits not far from the state of Missouri. An old, run-down building, missing windows and doors, it has been overgrown with foliage, and its dilapidated appearance has given it an ‘evil reputation’.

Charlotte Perkins Gilman is known for her themes of female entrapment and patriarchal control, and she gives this a Gothic twist in "The Giant Wistaria". A wealthy young couple and their friends rent a manor house, excited by the prospect that it’s haunted, and they are not disappointed when they all experience the same vivid dream.

Widely considered a classic of the gothic fiction genre, "The Tell-Tale Heart" is a short story by Edgar Allan Poe, first published in 1843. It follows an unnamed narrator who insists on his sanity after murdering an old man with a "vulture eye". The murder is carefully calculated, and the murderer hides the body by cutting it into pieces and hiding it under the floorboards. Ultimately, the narrator's guilt manifests itself in the hallucination that the man's heart is still beating under the floorboards.

The tale of murder and terror, told by a nameless homicidal madman, influenced later stream-of-consciousness fiction and helped secure the author’s reputation as master of the macabre. The narrator relates with relish his murder and dismemberment of an old man. Poe’s revelation of the narrator’s madness is a classic study in psychopathology.

These three tales were written for the popular literary gift annual The Keepsake in 1828, 1829, and 1831. Their "sensational" themes include exotic locations, dire misfortune, long-lost kin, stolen identity, evil redeemed, plots resolved by strange coincidences, and in one case at least, an encounter with a supernatural being. Gothic fare.

El corazón delator (en inglés original The Tell-Tale Heart) es un cuento del escritor estadounidense Edgar Allan Poe clasificado en la narrativa gótica. La historia presenta a un narrador anónimo obsesionado con el ojo enfermo (que llama "ojo de buitre") de un anciano con el cual convive. El corazón delator es considerado generalmente un clásico de la literatura gótica, y una de las obras más importantes de su autor. Ha sido adaptado o servido de inspiración en numerosas ocasiones y en distintos medios.

Berenice es un cuento de terror del escritor estadounidense Edgar Allan Poe. Fue publicado por primera vez en el periódico Southern Literary Messenger, en el año 1835. Ante su sadismo espeluznante, los lectores contemporáneos se manifestaron horrorizados con la historia y expusieron sus quejas al director del Messenger. La cita que encabeza el relato, en latín, puede traducirse: «Decíanme los amigos que encontraría algún alivio a mi dolor visitando la tumba de la amada».

Guido has lost it all. At rock bottom and wandering the shore, Guido spies a misshapen creature floating toward him in the water, riding on a huge chest. The creature offers Guido a path of revenge – switching bodies for three days in exchange for the untold riches in the chest. Guido unfortunately fails to see a potential downside. Through skillful handling of the gothic motif of the doppelgänger, Shelley’s tale explores concepts that would eventually culminate into her masterpiece – Frankenstein.

Mary Cecilia Rogers nació en Connecticut en 1820, desapareció el 4 de octubre de 1838 en circunstancias poco claras.

Una giovane coppia conduce una vita tranquilla e silenziosa in una casa piena di animali domestici molto amati. Il protagonista è particolarmente legato a Pluto, un gatto nero che lo segue ovunque. Tuttavia, col passare del tempo, il giovane inizia a bere sempre di più, e il suo comportamento cambia: diventa irato, scontroso e violento, arrivando a maltrattare sia la moglie che gli animali. La caduta nella decadenza e nel sadismo lo portano a commettere crimini atroci. Lo tormentano fino a farlo impazzire e l'esito non può che essere terribile.
