김희진 작가의 다섯 번째 장편소설 『얼마나 이상하든』. 작가는 『옷의 시간들』 『양파의 습관』 『두 방문객』 등을 통해 이별로 인한 상실과 결핍, 그럼에도 불구하고 현재를 살아갈 수 있게 하는 힘인 '사람과 사람 사이의 관계'에 대해 꾸준히 조명해왔다. 신작 『얼마나 이상하든』에서는 더욱 깊이 있고 생동감 넘치게 다양한 삶과 관계의 형태를 그려낸다.

공주의 인간개, 사람이 되기로 결심하다. 벨라스케스의 걸작에서 비롯된 어느 작고 위대한 인간의 이야기. 『바르톨로메는 개가 아니다』는 오스트리아 소설로 작가 라헐 판 코에이가 17세기 스페인을 배경으로 쓴 작품이다. 역사적 사실에 소설적 상상력을 접목시킨 이른바 팩션 형식의 『바르톨로메는 개가 아니다』. 이 책의 실마리가 된 벨라스케스의 [라스 메니나스]는 스페인 국왕 펠리세 4세의 공주 마르가리타를 중심으로 공주의 하녀와 시동들이 등장하는 그림이다.

2004년 영화진흥공사 재외동포 장편 시나리오 부문에 「썸머레인」이 당선되면서 작품 활동을 시작한 작가 황희는 휴먼 스릴러라는 한 가지 장르만으로 지금까지 9편 이상의 중단편 소설과 시나리오를 집필했다. 어떤 소설이라도 결국은 인간에 의한, 인간을 위한, 인간이 주제인 그녀의 작품 성격은 여러 단편들을 소개하면서 구체화 되어간다. 좀비로 변하고 나서 인간으로서의 자유를 비로소 느끼는 주인공이 등장하는 좀비 소설 「잿빛 도시를 걷다」, 팀 버튼의 우울하고 기괴한 애니메이션에 등장할 법한 외모, 예측 불가능한 성격의 중년 여자 「이웃 주민 방숙자」 등 그녀는 영화나 소설에서 좀처럼 찾아 볼 수 없는 독특한 개성을 지닌 캐릭터들을 창조해 낸다.
