A grisly double-murder at the height of the 1980s Miami Drug Wars.

By the time the sun sets on South Beach on the day of the murders, an eyewitness comes forward, and Miami police detectives arrest Krishna Maharaj, an importer and real estate speculator with no criminal history.

But could the case be as open and shut as it seems? 

Seven years into Krishna Maharaj’s stint on death row, a human rights lawyer named Clive Stafford Smith takes on Krishna’s case. He begins with a deep dive into the case documents, where he unearths several pieces of troubling evidence that never made it into Krishna’s original trial. 

Clive’s evidence begins to paint an extraordinary story, but the glacial pace and restrictive rules of the appellate process challenge the path to freedom for Krishna, and his wife, Marita. But as the evidence of Krishna's innocence grows increasingly stronger with each new discovery, their resolve only deepens. 

Attorney Clive Stafford Smith travels to the scene of the crime and attempts to piece together the events surrounding the murder as reported by the prosecution’s star witnesses. And the pieces just don’t fit. As he traces other inconsistencies, he lands at the only other room that was occupied on the 12th floor the day of the crime and learns about its mysterious occupant, thus opening up an entirely new line of investigation. 

With all signs pointing to collusion by the most infamous cartel operating in Miami at the time of the Moo Young murders, Clive and his team spread out across the United States, the Caribbean and Colombia to find former drug traffickers and cartel operatives, to find out what they know – and try to convince them to talk. 

After bringing the findings of his investigation into court, Clive reels from another devastating loss in the appellate courts, but he continues fighting to keep his options alive. As he threads the eye of an increasingly smaller procedural needle, Marita maintains the hope that she will one day be able to welcome her husband home.
