Publisher's Summary

In the follow-up to Knock Wood - her best-selling "engaging, intelligent, and wittily self-deprecating autobiography" (The New York Times) - Candice Bergen shares the big events: her marriage to a famous French director, the birth of her daughter, Murphy Brown, widowhood, falling in love again, and watching her daughter blossom.

A Fine Romance begins with Bergen's charming first husband, French director Louis Malle, whose huge appetite for life broadened her horizons and whose occasional darkness never diminished their love for each other. But her real romance begins when she discovers overpowering love for her daughter after years of ambivalence about motherhood. As Chloe grows up, Bergen finds her comic genius in the biggest TV role of the '80s, Murphy Brown, and makes unwanted headlines when Dan Quayle pulls her into the 1992 presidential campaign.

Fifteen years into their marriage, Malle is diagnosed with cancer, and Candice is unflinching in describing her and Chloe's despair over his death. But after years of widowhood, she feels the sweet shock of finding a different kind of soul mate. Candice takes us through the first years of her new marriage and shares the bittersweetness of watching Chloe leave home and flourish - and the comedy of a losing battle against those damn wrinkles and extra pounds.

A natural writer, Candice is hilarious, brutally honest, down to earth, and wise. She may be a beautiful Hollywood actress with a charmed life, but Candice is someone who can talk frankly about extraordinary events. Listeners will feel like they've just made a best friend.

up the speed to 1.5 and Candace sounds way better

Any additional comments?

There seemed to be a lot of complaints about Candace reading her story. I normally listen to books at1.25x's and on this book I upped it to 1.5 x's and it improved the listening pleasure ten-fold!!

A fine recounting of a life well lived

I enjoyed this book that felt honest and direct in recounting Candice Bergen's experiences and feelings. Well worth the time and well read by the author.

Enchanting Love Story

Clearly written with love and appreciation for her daughter, Chloe Malle. Redefining one's self as age and appearance changes, Candy is honest about the pitfalls of feeling less relevant. Her candor and wit are her saving grace as she navigates this stage in life.

Candy.... Sweet romance!

Excellent and selfless demonstration of a mothers' s love.... The greatest love between a parent and child, Bergen's love for Louis Malle, Murphy Brown, broadway, Marshall rose.... She takes us through her journey and she is appreciative, every step of the way, for her good fortune!

A Fine Romance is a Divine romance!!!

Where does A Fine Romance rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

One of the finest!!! Hearing the author read her own autobiography is an tremendous added dimension over just reading the book. It is especially terrific when the author is a great writer and marvelous actress.

What was one of the most memorable moments of A Fine Romance?

I am a fanatical watcher of "Murphy Brown" on the Encore channel. I daily watch 2 or 3 episodes. I was busy going to college and taking care of my mother in the late eighties and and through the nineties so I missed seeing it when it first ran. I enjoyed Candice explaining how the series was shot and her life during that period making the popular series.

Which character – as performed by Candice Bergen – was your favorite?

My birthday is May 9 the same as Candice 's birthday I was born in 1948, two years after Candice was born but the same year Murphy was supposedly born. All the episodes she mentioned of Murphy Brown are fresh in my memory. All her celebrity friends she names are known to me. I just saw two of her movies on TCM. She is easy to relate to because she describes her experiences with total honestly. We are all in the ups and downs and the in and outs of her incredible life. Thank you, Candice!!!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I was eagerly anticipating April 7th when the audiobook came out. I started it that day yesterday and just finished.it. I enjoyed it immensely!!

Any additional comments?

Candice has lead a fascinating life. Her ability to be so open and to remember in such detail is remarkable. I think the reason she is so good at writing is because she has kept a journal throughout her life She is so in touch with her feelings and so willing to share them.

Interesting story; the reading not as expected

Would you listen to A Fine Romance again? Why?

I found the stories themselves mostly interesting. But Ms. Bergen's reading leaves something to be desired. I just saw her on Today and she was so animated. But her read mostly sounded like she was in some sort of fog. Disappointing. I just wish her reading was as compelling as the stories themselves.

What three words best describe Candice Bergen’s voice?

Monotone.

A Perfect Listen!

Nicely written & performed autobiography. My favorite type of book for Audible. Candace went with me on walks, grocery shopping, and made the tedious task of tidying up way moe pleasant.

More than a Fine Romance

A Fine Romance turned out to be quite a surprise. Beautifully written with exquisite descriptions and peppered with funny lines, Candice Bergen writes a touching memoir that centres on the love of her life. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys memoirs or any great read. I found myself listening intently and laughing aloud. I couldn't wait to get to listen to this book. Bravo!
